Summer School Update | Autism PDD

I enrolled my dd in the summer pre-k program to get her used to going to her new school (she'd been at a previous school for 2 years).  Since it's summer school there are no supports for her in the classroom just the teacher with up to 10 kids.  I had a long conversation with her teacher on Monday and came away a little discouraged:although she's sweet and polite she's not attending to her work and she just wants to do what she wants (and we all about that ) and she started just walking around making noises which is something she doesn't really do. So I kept her home for Tues., Wed. and Thurs. to sort of get both of our bearings and just let her relax a bit because summer school started immediately after regular school let out.  I'm sure she's stressed out a little because everything is so new to her and it's a bit overwhelming and she just doesn't have the verbal skills to express all of her feelings

So I brought her back today and I'm hoping things go better.  The teachers were all happy to see her-they even were saying how they missed her!  One of the boys was like "Hey A is back." and it wasn't in a bad way he said it.  And then one of the mom's came up to me and said that her son was asking about her this morning and wanted to know where she was and when she was coming back.  It's nice to know thatt he impressions she's making aren't all bad.  It made my AM.  I am sorry that your daughter is having a hard time adjusting to a new
school. It would have been nice to have some supports. Thinking ahead for
next years summer, could you ask for an aide during your next IEP? It
sounds that the kids are kind and include her so that is a plus.Well it's been several rough weeks.  She's had several meltdowns and I've even been called a few times to come and get her.  I know that she's having to adjust to a new school and new teachers. Also since it's the summer so there's no aides or any extra support.  It's also been really hard because the teachers that she had gotten used to were only there for part of the summer and now she has to readjust to new teachers.

So, it's been hard for her but she's making progress.  Her language is improving a little.  Her coloring has improved 100%.  A couple of weeks ago it was purely "abstract" and now it's realistic and she's coloring in the lines. She used to write her name really big and now it's getting down to a more practical size.  She has also made 2 friends who help her (and the teachers) out alot.

Yesterday was a bad day for her and I was discouraged again and thought about pulling her out for a few days again but when I picked her up today she had earned a sticker for good behavior!  I can relax a little tonight.
And who knew a sticker could make an ADULT feel so happy, huh?  Congrats on a good day!  There will be plenty more where that came from.Well, we made it!  Today was the last day of summer pre-K, next stop kindergarden.  It was really rough going for awhile but she really made progress which is great considering no supports and teachers not trained in ese.  It was very important to get her used to going to her new school and not being with her old teachers and aides.  It just too bad that most of the kids are all going to different schools because she did make a friend who was just wonderful and took her under her wing which really helped out my dd and the teachers too.  We have until Aug. 20 to relax and play and enjoy a little summer.   Great job Mom! You made it. Sounds like you and yr dd made the best of it.
Enjoy and relax.
