My husband and I are trying to make flash cards with photos of very basic objects like Milk, Potty, Bed, Juice, Bread, etc.
I looked at the Bookstores for books to cut up... but they just aren't good enough. The photos aren't "basic" enough for me. (For example, they will have a glass of milk, then a photo of yogurt, and grapes, and a chicken sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes, and maybe a bunch of bananas, -- no i want "a sippy cup of milk" "a slice of bread" "a slice of cheese" "one banana" "one apple" "one plate of noodles" "one bowl of cereal" "one cookie" "a diaper" "a potty" "a bathtub" "a picture of my son's favorite toy new mater"
We are taking pics with the digital camera and we will print those but, to be honest, it is very time consuming and we aren't getting anywhere with 2 sons.
I can't believe the existing baby word books that are published are so BAD.
Any one know where I can get some pre-made cards of "milk" "bread" "socks" "shoes" "potty" "bed" really basic stuff?
I fear that our project could take months... because we have a 3 and 1 year old so it is next to impossible for us to do anything, especially when the 3 year old is either crying or clingy or climbing, getting into stuff, and running all over the place (and the little one is climbing and running and getting into stuff) all at the same time. (Meanwhile their dad is busy cooking, cleaning, computer-ing, and doing anything but finishing up the flash card project).
Try MY FIRST WORD BOOK by DK publishing (it's available on Amazon and in just about every store that sells books). It's used often by autism teachers when the need photos instead of icons. There is a whole series of books like it. I think you'll find lots of uses for it. Plus, it's a great book to start using with your child to get him used to "reading" with you.PECS system has basic pictures. But they can be pricey.
I know it can be time consuming to print out. Have you thought about online printing? PLaces like CLark COlor Labs and Snapfish have pretty reasonable printing, 8 cents for a 4x6 print. You just upload your photos to your computer, then upload to the online printers. THey mail the photos to your house.
*Lakesure learning materials has a very nice vocabulary photo cards in 6
thanks for the tips -- i'll try to get moving on this this week & get it done. I've been saving grocery ads that come in the mail, and cutting out those pictures to glue on notecards (laminating them is also helpful, but it does make it more expensive). Here's an example of some that I've made: http://www.positivelyautism.com/downloads/PictureCards.pdf
Many companies sell picture cards already made as well. Many of the best have been listed in this message: Super Duper, Different Roads to Learning, Do2Learn, etc.

You can get pictures off of the internet. That's what I do. I go on Yahoo, put in what you are searching for let's say ....bread, click on "images" above it. it will show you pages and pages of pictures of bread. Once you find an image you like, click on it, it will appear again with the website info under it. Now depending on how big you want it, double click on the picture again and you will get actual size. You can print it out as it is, or cut and paste to word and djust the size to whatever your need is.
I use it when I make social stories for him, picture schedules, etc. I printed out the store front of Walmart, the grocery store, the bank, post office. I printed out weather, food, places, all kind of stuff.
go to www.do2learn.com and click on free picture cards. You can print out the pictures for free in either 1 or 2 inch squares.Do what Adriens'smom said. I do this basically for a living for the kids I work with except I use Boardmaker. Thats just not practical though if you need it now. When I need actual pictures I go to yahoo.com and clikc images then type in what you need a vuala millions of pics. If you tpye in baby drinking you will get a baby drinking.
hope that helps

It is very hard to find good pics but these moms have great suggestions. My only advice is take it a little at a time. Print a few, teach them. then print some more. I guess one of my biggest problems in the beginning of all this is that I wanted all the cards now - but realistically they can not learn them all now, just work with waht is most helpful now and then to the next most helpful area and so on.I get true object icons from the speech therapist. It's free! He laminates them and puts velcro on the back. I ask for 2 at a time so I'm not a total pain. I like the photo search suggestions too. I got a wallet that holds velcro from augresources.com in red his favorite color. Sometimes you can find good posters of emotions, occupations, colors, shapes, letters, numbers, body parts ..ect at teacher's stores and just cut them up into flash cards..I am a kinko lamenator junkie:) Print up 6-12 pics on a paper and laminate~cut into pics....they are waterproof and last forever!Have you tried buying flash cards from the dollar tree, k-mart etc. You can always cut out a sentence and paste it onto the flash card. You can always buy a sticker/laminator a xyron. I took all my pics with digital cam, and printed them at Walgeen's.com.I
This site is by far the best I have found. I just love it! There are tremendous amounts of pictures to be found, photograph, and Icons. People using it can save their work for themselves, or share it with the mrs. Riley community, which most seem to do. This is great because it makes the work of finding decks of cards for diffeerent subjects very easy.
One of the features I like best is that if you can not find a picture you are looking for, it very easily alllows you to import a picture from three different online picture sources, such as yahoo pictures. And it is pretty much one click to import. Very, very user friendly, and super simple.
Mrs. Riley gives you a wealth of options for sizing and printing pictures. It allows you to label, or not to label, border, or not border. You can print a full page pictues, half page pictures, 3x5's, 4x6's, and 2x3, 2x2, and 1x1', and several other options are available also.
The only draw back some might find is that there is a users fee for the web site. You can pay for 1 year (.00) or pay for the site monthly- .00 per month. It is NOT a recurring charge. When your month is up, the next time you log in it asks you to pay for another month. But they do allow you to sample the site for free for 24 hrs. In that time I was able to print out several decks of pictures for free.
Hope you decide to check it out, it's a great site!
