When to pottytrain a NT child? | Autism PDD

Share

I just wanted to know what experience others have had training NT children?

My youngest son Brodey is only 19 mo. and has been telling me pee and kakah (his word for a BM) for a couple of months now. I check him and he's dirtied. Well yesterday I got him up and he said Kakah but when I checked he was still clean and dry. So I sat him on the big potty with an insert and he sat there and grunted but he couldn't plant his feet so he couldn't get comfortable enough to go.

I took him off and sat down to my computer and he stood behind me and boy could I smell it!

Anyway I was always told if they wake up dry and anounce it before they go there ready. But I also heard never start before age 2. I also wonder what reaction should I expect from my almost 5 y/o HFA child who shows NO INTREST in potty training. Will this encourage him? Anyone have experience with this?

I am in some need of advice because it been so many years since I trained a NT child.

Thankyou

Nelle

Hi...Nelle, Just wanted to say that I feel that whenever the child is ready and shows such a readiness that you should let the child try...was also told that we should never force a child(i am in no way saying that you are),so i say..if your 19 mos old is showing signs of wanting too then let him try... as for the other child it may in fact help that child to want to try..worth a shot!!

My daughter was 2and 1/2 NT when she was potty trained...but again waited till she showed signs...m&m's worked with her.....was done in 3wks...and she NEVER night time wet either...that was my wonder child

I have'nt had really any experience with your situation...but really think that you should just do what each child is ready to do!! and see what happens...

what a wonderful thing that your 19 mos old is ready!!  My mom told me that my brother was ready at 18 mos.........i was the flip side..later..much later!! each child is different....      Good luck!! I have 'heard' that you NOT should 'force' a child to begin potty training before 2, but certainly if your child is telling you he has to go and is dry all night ... the time is ripe to train!  Lucky YOU!  I'm wondering if/when Luke will EVER be ready!  And I guess it's too soon to 'train' the newborn, huh? kaviar38556.6137268519

I think a lot of children that are NT show signs of being ready at that age. I know my oldest son did show those signs.  I did wait until the week he turned 2 and it only took a week and their were no accidents during the day or night after that week.  I got lucky with that one I think..LOL  But I honestly believe that if I let him start at your brodey's age he would have been able to do it.  I think if  they are showing all the physical signs of being ready and they are also interested in trying then it's just fine to start that early.  I think it would only be a bad thing to push it on a child that isn't ready...regardless of age.  I don't believe that age is a factor sometimes.  Every  child is unique and is ready when they are ready.  So I think from what you have told me....GO FOR IT!!!   And keep us posted.  Take care,

Karrie
