TOME- My daughter is 3 yrs old, we are also trying to potty train and not having an easy time with it. Our doctor suggest to us that we wait a cpl months and try again! It is a big step for children weather they are on the spectrum or not! I take her to the bath room with me when i go everytime and sit her on the potty, If she goes we reward her if she doesnt we tell her that she is a big girl for sitting on the potty chair and trying!  My daughters teacher told us she does a potty training boot camp and she said for most kids it works but if they arent ready they wont potty train! i know that diapers are expensive and are a pain, in ohio there are a few different companies that offer free huggies in larger sizes! It also good to  check out a few sights on potty training that may help! Unfortunatly i didnt have a boy and i know there are alot of difference in training!  None of my kids wrere completely trained until they were over 3 every child is different it just finding something that works for them!I am in the same boat.  I have been trying for months and I am not having any luck.  My son turned 4 in May I too take him to the bathroom and my husband as well, He is showing some signs that hes ready but at other times he could care less if he's wet or soiled.

Mine were not potty trained until they were 7.  They still wear pullups at night.  YOu have to take into account their developmental age along with their actual age.  And some kids on the spectrum are never potty trained.  I was told to not even try until they were older.

Hi Tome... I have a 5yr old with AS.. he started to show signs of wanting to use the potty in Jan 05... what i did was make a sticker chart and each time he would sit on the potty he would recieve a sticker..(if he went or not) i also set a timer and when it went off he knew it was time to go and try!  Then when he started actually going pee pee he would get a sticker for going pee pee....I also used marbles ... each time he would pee he also got to put a marble in a container..and when he got 5 marbles he would get a small surprise... the better he got the more marbles it took to get the surprise...well that worked for my little guy..he is in fact potty trained..took 4 mos...but he did it....he stiil wears pull ups at night..he is'nt night time potty trained yet....but thats ok..that will come!!

What we all have to remember is that different things work for different kids...and we try different things to see if they respond....and leave it up to the child to know when their ready or not.... I did that...i waited and waited...and finally HE was ready!! and i'm soooo glad that i did it that way....so just let it happen... it will...just give him the time he needs!! try new and fun things...make it a happy time...i also read books to him while he sat!! ANYTHING to get him to atleast try!!

Good luck...I know how hard it can be....                        Tami (:

My question is what do you do if your child is afraid to sit on the big toilet?? My son is pretty much potty trained he wears no pullups and tells us when he has to go but one catch he will only sit on a potty chair to have a bm. This is fine and ok when he is home but what are we supposed to do away from home?? He is in a special school that has a potty chair and is in a preschool class with children who are on the spectrum so some of them aren't even potty trained at all. But next year he is supposed to main stream into public school.... what if he is still not sitting on a regular toilet? Do they have to make exceptions for him? Most of the time he waits until he is home from school anyways he is pretty regular and goes at the same time everyday. But we havent gone away from home overnight yet and if we do I guess I will bring the potty chair with us
