a speech breakthrough | Autism PDD

My son made a breakthrough.  He is 1 week shy of his 4th birthday.  His speech delays, are in receptive, expressive, conceptive language.

Yesterday afternoon, we were at grandma's house and at her house he has about a half dozen of the imaginarium magnetic trains.  However, he has only about three or four wooden tracks for them to ride on.  We searched all over the house for more and couldn't find any.  So I told him " we have a box full of tracks at home, we'll bring them here next time so you can play with your trains here."

Later that nite, My husband, Adrien, and I were all in the basement, and Adrien found a few stray wooden tracks.  He said "we found it" .  Knowing that he probably remembered the situation from earlier at grandmas house, I said "we can take those to grandmas house tomorrow after school so you can play with the trains"

He, without much thought process said "let's go to grandmas house, see ya later dad", and proceeded to head to the door.  I looked in shock towards my husband.  He of course thought it was amusing.  What was amusing was that it was 9:45 pm, and my son was heading for the door, as if he knew the way, which he probably does, but was not concerned with the fact that somebody has to drive the car

I quickly had to come up with a distraction, so as to avoid the monster I may have just created by suggesting to take the tracks to grandmas house.  I got him off the topic, and my husband managed to find 2 trains, and set him up with tracks.

We were so impressed and proud, he understood, what I had said and suggested, he declared his thought and mission, and then insisted on going.  All of this by using his own words.  There is hope!!!!

Sarah never had spontaneous language till after 5 probably..most of her words were for needs and prompted questions. Congratulations on a BIG breakthough!!

To Adrien's mom I only hope by 4 my son can make his needs known as your boy has!

I am so so happy to hear that....I work with these little ones all the time and it just touches my heart wheen I hear they are making gains in communication skills......It might not be  a huge step, but ANY step torward increasing communication skills is a plus!

Last year I worked with a little one that was 4 1/2 years  that had trouble with initiating, turn taking, limited eye contact, commenting, answering questions etc.  The whole year we forcused on ALOT of PLAY in therapy.  By the end of the year he appeared to maintain more eye contact, giggle at his own responses (2-3 words phrases-which I had never heard him laugh before) and was able to answer simple questions.....it almost brought tears to my eyes.....it is my passion to work with these kiddos:)

Congratulations
