Hearing wrong sounds? | Autism PDD

I know what your are talking about!     You are not crazy!    It could be an Auditory Processing Disorder.     We have had  some trouble with this.     I  remember Bryce being tested for this years ago.     The hearing may be just fine but the brain processes it differently.     There is help for this.   Ask  your ST about it and have them tested for it.    It is a communication problem and can give them trouble in school so the school should have to pay for or supply the testing.

good luck!    Bryce is much better now!!   This is workable!!

I have a question. Both of my boys have had their hearing tested several times, and it is perfect. I know they can hear, but I have been wondering if they hear things wrong. I read somewhere that happens with autistic kids, but when I mentioned it to the neurologist, she looked at me like I was crazy. (You would think I would start getting used to that look by now, but not quite yet!)

Anyway, for instance, they both say "kidneybell" instead of tinkerbell. And almost all words with a short "u" sound comes out like a "oo" sound instead. (Instead of "bug" they say "boog")

There are lots of other ones, and because of these issues, a lot of times I am sure they are making perfect sense, but nobody can understand them. They get things waaaaaaaaay off. It is frustrating. No matter how many times I repeat the word the right way, they continue saying it the wrong way over and over. I swear that when I say "Tinkerbell" they hear "kidneybell," and those sounds aren't even close!

Does anyone else see this in their kids, or know anything about it?

Could it be articulation issues??

You know, all those sounds require lots of diff't tongue and mouth manipulation and at least in our case it was Riley's verbal apraxia that caused this exact same problem.  (yeah we were professional translators too!!)  But if you think about it, check how many diff't facial/mouth positions you have to make to say those things.  I understand what you're saying, you're thinking "how did he even come up with that?!?!"

It took lots of speech therapy, but it did improve.  No more translating!
Just a thought!
