Mason's psychiatrist would like him to start zyprexa...Mason has a lot of agression and behavior problems and we have tried depakote and geodon and haven't had much help...so now it's zyprexa...she feels that we just weren't getting enough control on the geodon...we had some and we might go back to it in the future if we can't find something better. From what I have read and what she told me the biggest side effect is weight gain from increased appetite...well Mason is soooo skinny anyway and never eats, maybe this will help him a little...she said though, with weight gain can come high cholesterol or diabetes, so if we see any weight gain we need to monitor for that...also tics are a side effect, but not just medication tics, permanent tics...so we need to watch for that. Any kids out there take this? Did it help? What were your biggest concerns and challenges on this medication? Anything else I should be watching for? Thanks all for your help! I hate starting new meds, whether it's for his seizures or for behavior!! My son does not take zyprexa but with zyprexa there is a risk of getting diabetes. Some people here talk about usin, with success, risperdal or abilify. Has your sons dr. considered those? My youngest was on zyprexa for almost 3 years. He slept alot, became more aggressive...and gained A LOT of weight. When I took him off the zyprexa he lost about 60 pounds. His behaviour was so much better. He is now on no medication, and is doing "ok". My middle son is currently on abilify. I think that it is working, however he still has aggression, mood swings, and defiance...I have tried to take him off the abilify to see how he handles it, he is worse without it...so apparently, it must be helping some. Thanks for the posts zayzer and fordexpr1...yes his psych mentioned a few other meds abilify being one of them...she said that most times abilify doesn't work alone and another med has to be added, so she wanted to wait for that one, and work our way through the single meds first...she mentioned a few others too, but had her reasons for not wanting to use those...rhisperdol was because it causes a deficiancy in the hormone prolactin (sp?) which can cause weak bones...so she said she thought the zyprexa was a better choice. Ford...do you know if the weight gain was from increased appetite or did he seem to gain weight anyway? They had originally told me the depakote would cause weight gain and Mason didn't gain any weight with that...he is still on the depakote for seizure control, they just dropped the levels down to a seizure control level rather than a behavioral level. Also, does the diabetes come from the weight gain also, or does the zyprexa actually cause diabetes...I know there are a lot of side effects from his seizure meds too, some of them behavioral, but there can be things like kidney failure and liver failure, so we have always had to take him in to get blood levels done every 3 months...I know the side effects scare me and I wish I could just say NO, but Mason has a chance of getting more brain damage with seizures, so I always have to ask....what's worse? Mason was just recently diagnosed with autism, and his psychiatrist always talks to me about bi-polar in young children...referres a lot of books about bi-polar, but hasn't officially diagnosed him as bi-polar...she says she would rather treat the symptoms than worry about an actual diagnosis...another question, maybe I should ask her or one of his doctors is-- Is it common for someone to have autism & bi-polar...was the psychologist to quick to give him an autism diagnosis? Can they both be treated with similar treatments? or is bi-polar more a medication type treatment...UGH, maybe I should be researching bi-polar more than autism to see if I can't help more with these behaviors...THIS IS SO HARD!!!! I never know which way to turn with all of his problems! Sorry about the vent, I'm just so confused about everything...is it autism, is it bi-polar, is it seizures...I honestly don't think his doctors' know half the time!!!! Thanks again! It is hard. Ask the Dr. a lot of questions. Is the risk of diabetes with zyprexa more than the risk of increased prolactin levels with risperdal? Which one can give the most benefit with the least side effects? What makes the Dr. think that he has bipolar instead of just autism? It seem it would be rare to have autism and bipolar and epilepsy but anything is possible. It is a good thing that the dr. will just treat the symptoms instead of trying to dx a child that young with bipolar. I would do all the research I could on each of those med. and give the dr. your opinion on which one will be better for your son. It could help the dr. in making a decision. It may take a while but with you and your dr. working on this you will find the right med or combo to help. I wish you luck. I wish I could help more. OCD?anxiety? ODD? Tourette's? Schizophrenia? Autism? All the labels they've thought of throwning at my ds at one point or another Risperdsal Prozac Zoloft Luvox Chlorpromazine Seroquel novo-something or other Finally....Lithium ZYPREXA,fluephenazine,met-formin and inderal he has gained alot of weight lots of eating.....behavior still difficult but short lasting meltdowns still holes in walls punching self in head screaming and swearing he got met-formin to get his weight back down he tried hard to exercise but it wouldnt be enough any questions at all please ask me ![]() p.s. i was trying to say that it didnt really matter what they called the illness as long as the meds settled him enough for him to go to school and llive in our home my son was given the bipolar dx's 3 years ago and all the meds you are talking about are the meds that he has tried. He is now on seroquel but I see no difference in him than with any other med. We are going Thursday to have him tested for autism. ( yes i have a busy day that day dd's IEP in the morning and his appt in the afternoon) My son will be turning 10 next week. He doesnt have the explosive rages that are usually associated with bipolar and I see his sister who is dx'ed acting just like he did when he was younger. He has also not been helped at all from any of the meds for bipolar they have tried with him. If you want more info you can PM me. I also have bipolar and so does my dad so I know ALOT about it. Emerald, I think the weight gain was from increased appetite. My youngest (the one that took zyprexa) was first dx with bipolar. he was hospitalized for 9 weeks. Long, sad story. Anyway, I thought the dx was wrong. so, I had him eval. they said he had MR. so, I took him to a neurologist who believes he has autism, had another eval. they said probably autism, having ADOS test June 19. So my middle son is dx. with bipolar and MR. I think both sons have autism. I am going to have middle son eval done somtimr soon. My oldest is dx ADHD, but he also has sensory issues, so who knows? I say we could take our kids to 10 different doctors and get 10 different answers. I have been told that children with bipolar disorder do not neccessarily have developmental delays, all 3 of my children do. I think that my youngest definitely has autism, my middle son has aspergars or PDD, and my oldest...not sure. I am going to have all of them evaluated. Do the best you can, and if you are not happy with the Dx, get a 2nd opinion. or a 3rd, etc. Do not be afraid to ask questions, I think you are smart for researching. I know a lot about bipolar, scitzophrenia, MR, and I am in the process of learning about autism...I have learned a lot thanks to this forum. I know a lot about different meds as my kids have been on a bunch. zyprexa I believe does not so much cause diabetes, I believe it is the weight gain that causes the diabetes. My kids have been on zyprexa, abilify, risperadol, seroquel, adderall, concerta, depakote, and clonidine, prozac...I think maybe a few more too. Educate yourself, you are doing great!! If you have any more questions for me, fell free to ask. My mom took metformin for her type 2 diabetes. Do your own research and some answers from the dr.
Atypical antipsychotic drugs may be linked to diabetes and other blood sugar disorders in children. Children are commonly prescribed Zyprexa for schizophrenia, ADHD, and bed-wetting. Juvenile Diabetes, also referred to as Type 1 Diabetes, inflicts children quickly, and brings an endless risk of damaging complications. Juvenile diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks and demolishes the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Each year approximately 13,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S., or 35 children each and every day. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using olanzapine and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
Continue taking olanzapine and talk to your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects:
Thank you all so much for your help! I appriciate it so much!
