Looking for help | Autism PDD

I have a beautiful 8 year old daughter with aspergers and anxiety disorder. We start to notice things were not quite right with Grace at age 9 mon. She had a very large head that was growing too fast. She like to sit alone in her infant seat and just stare. As she got older she would have meltdowns in walmart because of the fluorescent lights. She hate loud sounds and has many other sensory issues.  At first I home school her but this seemed to make anxiety of public places worse. This last year she attend public 2nd grade. She cried every day I dropped her off. But she did do well during the day. Academically she is on track. Her main issue is her inability to write sentence. She still requires speech therapy but doesn't receive any other help. I don't know any other asperger kids. I would love to home school her but most of her problems are social and I want her to do well as an adult. Do any of you know where I can find a good support? I am looking for a message board or e-mail group or something. I just want someone to share idea with and to sympathize with during our struggles.

Thanks

Isabel

Did you have her hearing fully evaluated.  I know some people have a hearing condition where they can actually hear humming that flourescent lights and believe it or not, transformers put off.  They can hear I think it is low tones that other people can't and it can interfer with their daily life.

Isabel,

Hi and welcome to the board!!  I have a 3 year old boy with PDD-NOS.  There are other parents here that have children with aspergers so you've found the right place.  Just thought I would tell you welcome.  I'm sure that the other aspie parents will see your post and respond.  Take care,

Karrie

Hi, Isabel!

We have a lot in common. I have a 10 year old DS with Aspergers and
Anxiety Disorder. He has sensory issues with sound, and especially
smell. I have found that supplements have been a huge help in making
these issues more managable. He takes 250 mg of magnesium, 200 mg
of B-6, a multi-enzyme, fish oil and DMG, and though I was skeptical
when I first tried it, I have to say that his sensory intergration issues have
been reduced by at least 75%! He also has severe learning disabilities,
much like your daughter. When he was 8, he could barely write a
sentence independantly. He just graduated elementary school, and he
wrote his own speech for the ceremony, and delivered it in front of an
audience of over 200 people!

I'm sure you know that you need to get your DD all the services available
to you in your state. Speech therapy is a wonderful start for children like
ours with language processing disabilites. She also needs social skills
therapy and educational therapy to help her with her learning disabilities.
The first place to go is her school. Ask for a new IEP, and demand a full
assesment. I'll bet they don't even acknowledge she has a learning
disability, right? You may have to have her privately assessed, and
present the results to them at an IEP. If they refuse services for her, be
prepared to file Due Process. I was walking in your shoes when my son
started the fourth grade a few years ago. I put my faith in the school that
they knew what they were doing, and the entire year was a disaster. I had
to pull him out of that school with only five weeks left last year, and won
a big settlement last summer. Please don't wait for things to completely
unravel. Feel free to ask me as many questions as you want!

Welcome Isabel. Tammy is right I heard of a severely autistic adult that can hear the different tones of whales / dolphins,... can hear helicopters from miles away.... etc. So I agree with Tammy I would get thehearing checked.

My son is almost 10 and has a 10 year old "friend" with aspergers. There are several parents here who have aspies too. I hope you find this message board as enjoyable and supportive as many of us here do.
