THanks... the reason given is for impulsiveness. They are saying his impulsiveness could be keeping him from getting the most from his environment-keeping him from focusing during school/therapy. I am concerned because I thought I had seen alot of posts stating that ASD kids dont  do well on stimulants. I would greatly appreciate your input! C has food/sensory issues, so we are concerned that the med would make it worse-ritalin usually makes you loose your appetite. Also, he has 5 words now, up from 0 words in Feb. He is starting to make gains in speech- I dont want to zombie him out.I know their are tons of old posts about meds, so sorry for the question

What is the purpose of the ritalin in this case?  I think that 3.5 is awfully young, but if I knew the reason I might be able to help more.  I am a family doc and I have prescribed ritalin.  As a Mommy, I'd tend to say go with your gut until you are comfortable with and agree with the reason for the medication...

You don't know till you try and chances of it working are not great but
they are there. I know some parents who said that it helped their kid
focus enough to be able to learn skills. I tried my ds on ritalin and on
dexedrine. Neither did work for him. He wasn't zoning out but it made
him tolerate any stimulation much less and he went fom meltdown to
meltdown.
This is totally your decision. I think 3.5 is a bit young. I would be sure to
have a doctor prescribe and monitor who is very familiar with asd kids. I
have heard that ritalin is a good drug to try first and always at lowest
possible dose. The good news is that it is out of the system after several
hours (depends on drug given - between 4 or 8 or 12 hours) and should
not leave any longer lasting effects.

Its a good idea to read what the manufacturer says.  For ritalin, it says it is not recommended for children under 6 and has in rare circumstances resulted in seizures and sudden death.  I would not give this to a child under 4 and not between 4 to 6 unless they were essentially non-functional without it.  And of course, I am definitely not a doctor and this is not to be considered medical advice, just my opinion.

I'm not sure that prescribing Ritalin for "impulsiveness" is the right thing to do.  Preferably, this type of drug is prescribed for a certain diagnosis.  However, in the world of autism there are so many more questions than answers.

I don't know all of your history, but an OT who is familiar with treating autism and sensory integration issues would be great.  When Andrew was 2 and 3 years old, the OT and speech therapy combined helped dramatically!

Does your child have a BIP = Behavioral Intervention plan?  What problems are happening due to the impulsiveness?  Is your child getting injured?  Perhaps an FBA = Functional Behavioral Assesment followed by the creation of a BIP would help more than starting a drug...Just a thought.

Yes, it is true that alot of ASD children cannot tolerate the stimulant type meds..

My son  6 1/2yrs old )just started on Focalin this weekend...which is sort of like Ritalin, although it the drug is a modified version of Ritalin  and has only the most active component of Ritalin.  We tried Luke on Adderal XR last year and it had no effect, other than made him loose about 10pounds(and he's already a string bean)

We were not too thrilled to try Focalin. But after much weighing of pro's and con's and consulting with dr's..we thought to try it out..We are trying it for our son's "adhd" type behaviors...however, we were also recommended to try Risperdal also in conjuntion w/it for his "aggressive" behaviors when he becomes frustrated.

For now, we're only trying the Focalin first. Med's are hard thing to figure out. The hardest part is that you won't know until you  try it. What works for one child may have horrible side effects for another, and vice versa.

My heart goes out to you, it's a tough choice. I'm sure alot of us are in the same boat. It's hard to decide on if you should or shouldn't give such a young child a powerful medication.

My daughter went wig-gi on ritalin! We discontinued this treatment! Found some thing which works for our daughter! RITALIN is a controlled substance! Why? Because it is dangerous! Even under a Dr's. care!

I don't know the details of your situation but I have huge reservations about using any meds on a three year old. We tried Ritalin with our son when he was 8 and it totally "zombied" him out, he didn't want to talk to anyone at school... and it totally ruined his appetite for about 2 hours after taking it. We stopped using it after about 2 weeks even though we were told it might take longer to settle in for him but we just couldn't take those side effects any longer. There must be some behavioral programs to try or maybe you already have?

I truly understand your reservations.  My son (ASD, 4) is currently taking a small dose of Ritalin 2X per day.  He, too, was prescribed it for impulsiveness (at least in large part.)  He has had no real adverse effects except that he's pretty tired after it wears off and, of course, his appetite is less during the day.  He has only lost a few pounds and it really does seem to calm him down.  He's not a "zombie" like others report.

It really just depends on the child.  Our hope is that this can allow him to focus better and learn so he's not so far behind when he begins school.  You can always stop the meds. if they're not working.

I have been contemplating ritalin for my son.. His doctor feels it is necessary if nothing else is working for him.. The bottom line is that his early intervention has stopped for the summer until stay and play program coming up which is a summer preschool for these kids twice a week with their therapists.. I also requested extra support through the local mh/mr program..I am excited about that and also need to realize that when the time comes that he needs to be in a structured setting and cannot stay still long enough, that's when to consider something.. (I won't say it's ritalin yet)  I agree that 4 years old is young.  Whenever we take him publicly anywhere with his leash, it is a struggle at times so we use the techniques, talking him down, doing the spins, etc , to be calm and of course I get looks like

I am passing the stage of embarrassment because frankly if a person won't understand it is their problem not mine.. I am too busy talking him down anyway..

My husband has been wonderful and we have been very positive through each situation although we cry at times to get it out.. I am told this is all a part of it and it will get better.. I tend to agree and thank GOD for forums like these to take us through the times along the way..  

 

I am not a Doctor either. However I am a concerned parent who has tried Ritalin on my own child with not so good results! We also tried Mona-Vie.

 IT WORKS! in just 30 days her grades went up 1 full letter grade!

i think it is important to point out that i don't know of any drug taken for autism. it is important to know what you are trying to achieve. if you child seems like he is in a dreamlike state, maybe try a diet. if you want your child to learn easier and increase speech, maybe try vitamins and aba therapy.

people on medication take it for anxiety, concentration, etc and there isn't a way, in my opinion, to determine if a three year old has any problems yet.

I am still conflicted, but we are trying it. C has been on small dose since saturday. So far, I dont see any of the major side effects. He eats a lot in the pm, and he is still sleeping ok. At school they said he is sitting good during circle time, and we are starting extra speech and ot therapy this week,too. This will be the most hours he has had of therapy. Hopefuly the med will help him focus better in therapy... I dont know... I am still torn, because he is so young

I was one of those people years ago.. back when I was single and dating (my husband) we were at the mall and I noticed a woman with a child and a leash attached and I of course judged not being a mom and having no clue whatsoever.. "Why, that is so inhumane.. the child is not a dog for heavens sakes!"  My "boyfriend" at the time, husband now, pointed out that sometimes that is required for parents so the children can stay still and I just chimed in something to the effect of, "Well, then perhaps they need to take a look at their discipline skills!"  ....

... and of course,, he we are now!  nothing like wanting to eat up all the words and thoughts I had back then! 

a big OOPS!!!!!!!  so, I suppose I need to do what I need to do and shut the heck up!  hmmm?

I truly believe there are some children, and sometimes adults, who absolutely do need some medications to give them the quality of life they couldn't have otherwise. But I also believe that giving these meds to a preschooler is not indicated as they need to be free to explore their environment unhindered. If the time comes when they are say 6 or 7 and they cannot attend to their school work then that is the time to explore the medications. I absolutely know how hard it is to handle a child who is very hyper and has no fear but that is when the leashes come in handy.   Allison, don't you just love those people who have preconceived ideas about the use of the child leash? Let them spend a few minutes with us and they would be begging for one! 

May I ask what Ambrotose is?
