IEP recommended but postphoned until sep? | Autism PDD

Our dd turned 3 a few weeks ago, we are in disagreement with the school.
We had the ARD meeting (an IEP mtg in other states), and because we are in
disagreement, there is a 10-day recess. Our school ended last week. So, 10
school days puts us into the last week of August (once school begins again),
& that is when we meet again. I suppose that may be what they are doing
for you too? If he is in school right now, already receiving services, then I
really don't know why they don't just iron it all out now, so that come fall,
his program is all set. I know I have been here a lot asking new-to-this questions and I soo
appreciate all the answers.
So here is my newest questions: My ds had the assesments and the
deadline for our IEP is 6/1/07. They showed me the IEP in which they
recommended services but we disagreed on some of the goals/
objectives. Well, we had another meeting today where I thought we would
straigten it out. Instead they told me since they would not implement
anything anyway for the remainder of the year and since I asked for a
baseline measurement to be added to the goals they just want o wait till
September when ds is in a new school for them to deal with it (and do
baseline measurements and all that good stuff). I did not have any
allusion about them doing much before end of year but can they just
postphone an IEP until september if it was supposed to be written by 6/1?
I did not sign anything so I don't believe that they can call the IE- draft an
IEP for the meantime. This is his first IEP and even though he has been struggling a lot he has
not received services. I was told that they can't do anything until he has
an IEP. We have school here for another 3.5 weeks - the schools
reasoning for not wanting to make the necessary changes (their IEP has
no baseline functioning or objective measure) is that their school is being
closed and ds will be at a different school next year "we don't know how
they like to do that" Sounds a lot like 'pass the bucket' to me and their
deadline to come up with an IEP is 6/1. While I could probably really push
to just have them do it but by the time I get someones attention the
schoolyear is over and most of the 'team members' will be in different
districts next year. I don't know, I just feel discouraged. This may help you--find your state & figure out how many days have
passed since your son's evaluation. If the beginning of next school year
is past that timeline, the school MUST implement the IEP now.

Someone else may be able to guide you further. Everything I am finding
that I have seems to be state-specific (I am in Texas), so it may only
confuse you. I would see if you have an online state advocacy program.
We have a great one here, with a free online course (that is helpful no
matter what state you are in), check it out: www.partnerstx.org/index.htm

I am slightly confused because here it is the district who makes the
decision--the evaluation team is not affiliated w/ a particular school & my
guess is that for the IEP meeting, they should have the administrator,
educator, and any other personnel they want at that meeting already on
staff. I would think everyone could meet at your son's future school & get
the IEP written. I know that would be much more preferable, so that you
have all the services ready to go for fall. Plus, there are specific
timelines/deadlines that the district must adhere to. If you can't find the
info you need, or don't get any further w/ the school, I would find an
advocate. Search 'advocate' there & there are links to sites to find one by
state.

Hi My son Zachary just had is first IEP meeting.  Although the goals were written now in May, they will not be implemented until August, which is when our new school year starts.  (He just turned 3 in April)  During the meeting I spoke up reguarding some of his goals, and the representative from his "new school" assisted me in re-wording what I did not like.  She also invited me to come in during the beginning of the year to change any thing else as I feel appropriate.  I hope that you would be afforded this same courtesy.  You can get an advocate if you feel necessary.  However, it's probalbly just because it is the end of the year that this is going on.  Also, I do  not understand what you mean by base-line functioning or objective measure.  I am assuming base-line functioning means functioning at an age appropriate level.  Because each child is different in every aspect there really cannot be a base measurement, however you can check pediatric websites to find out what skills children should have to be functioning at an age appropriate level.  Good Luck!  Have a great summer.
