Hi
I'm Maggie mommy to 2 year old twins Brooke & Riley and 7 month old Lindsay and wife to my best friend Norman. I am from Ohio but have lived in Alberta Canada for 4 1/2 years. I am a stay at home mommy and my hubby is a forestry Officer. My sweet angel Riley was just diagnosed with ASD in June. We are in the process of starting an IBI program for him out of our home. We live in a very remote area and are have a hard time finding services. So we are teaming up with Autism Partnership to run his program. He sees a PT once every 2 weeks for an hour. We are trying to see the Speech Path. but have only got in 1 time. I drive an hour and a half each way to get him to the hospital to see them. We are hoping to move if my hubby can get a transfer so that we will be closer to one of the bigger cities to get more services. Well one good thing is we don't have to pay for any of his programing or for our aid the Alberta government pays for all of it . I am not sure how this works in the states. We have thought about moving back to Ohio but we need to do some research on how much is offered there. Right now we are trying to deal with Riley's sensory issues. Well thats a little about us and what we are dealing with right now. I look foward to chating and learning.
Maggie,

Hi Maggie, Welcome to the board! I live in Ohio and I can tell you its VERY HARD for me anyways to get help and services for my son. Special ed preschool was great but once he transitioned into public school it was a whole new ballgame! Not sure exactly what info you are looking for but ask away and Im sure someone will try to help answer the questions.
Hi there. Just wanted to say welcome to the board! It's a great place. I have a 4 yr old dd and a 2 yr old ds who I am in the process of evaluating for an autistic disorder. I hope you find this site as helpful as I have.

Michelle,
We were just trying to find out about funding for programing. Does the state pick up the tab? And if so is it income based.. (it is not here). Is there a program for preparing for school? Here he can go to school at 3 with his aid to help him get ready. Do you need to use your private insurance to help pay for any of the programming? I called the Ohio dept. of Education and they said something about a ,000 scholarship that could be applyed for to be used in private schooling? Do you know anything about that?
Oh I don't remember signing up for all of this when we decided to have babies
I can't speak for any other states except for Kentucky, tennessee, and south carolina. In these three states they have an early intervention program or Birth to 3 program that is run by the state and is free regardless of income. These programs have early interventionist that come to your home and give therapies to your child to include..Speech therapy...OT therapy...and PT therapy. My son recieved an hour a week of each of these therapies. THe amount of therapy that you get depends on the amount of delay that your child shows upon evaluation. ALso after 3 years of age in these 3 states your child is then transferred to the public school system for special ed preschool and also will recieve these therapies there if needed. Like I said...I can't speak for any other state but in these three states income is not even a factor.

Hi Maggie,.... I lived in Maryland before my son turned 3. But I know here they have the birth to 3 program in Ohio and once your child turns 3 they would go through special ed preschool which is free if they have a disability. There are services that can be applied for and they do go by income on a sliding fee scale. I have not heard anything about the ,000 scholarship so I would love more info On that if possible. I know I have had great difficulty getting services here, funding is being cut all over the place. Even SSI is income based and they have made more cuts and made it more difficult to qualify for SSI.
here are some links to help you with searching for things..... What part of Ohio are you from or where in Ohio would you be looking to move back to? There are MANY people here on the boards from Ohio all scattered across the state chances are someone will probably be in the general area you are looking into moving to and might be able to give you more specific help.
Now I also know you can apply for medicaid waiver or BCMH (Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps) those will go along with your private insurance to help cover expenses autism related... Im not positive of the exact guidelines for payment, but many working families qualify
