These sound great, but are they too scripted? We are taking away a lot of the video stuff. BB learns from them, but he obsesses. He gets into bed and recites whole Dora episodes from scratch. He starts requesting "Potty Time Elmo," but he is using as entertainment.
Do these videos lend themselves to that echolalia or real, practical learning of skills? I do not want to create another obsession/stim.
I absolutely love them...
We have all of them and used them in our ABA programs daily. If your child likes to model videos as mine does I would urge you to get them.. Sarah had to imitate what the kids said and did on the dvd! It was so wonderful to see her make comments to peers she learned from watching it. It is made specifically for our kids that are very visual...and has great pauses here and there to reinforce the skills. It comes with cd-rom to print the social skills out to make social books too:) My ABA consultant borrows mine all the time for her kiddos she works with. I think they are great and better than any other social skills videos out there for our kids:) My .02 cents
Thanks!
HI I WAS KINDA WONDERING THE SAME THING. DOES ANYONE HAVE THE WATCH ME LEARN VIDEOS AS WELL. I'M TRYING TO DECIDE WHETHER TO BUY THE MODEL ME KIDS OR THE WATCH ME LEARN DVDS. THEY BOTH LOOK AWESOME BUT AT AROUND .00 EACH I WANT TO TRY TO GET THE BEST ONES.
EILEENP THEY HAVE VIDEO CLIPS OF THE WATCH ME LEARN DVDS TOO. THANKS
They give your child the appropriate words and action to use in certain social sitiuations and "Why" we use these words or actions..like "greeting a peer, sharing so the peer will feel included, listening to the peer while looking at them & why that is important..it is well made using only kids in the whole show.. It isnt catchy or musical gives many visual cues for the child to not only listen to what is taught but has visual to rely on too. It is slow enough to not overwhelm them with skills and visual enough to keep them watching..It is real practical teaching..no games or silly songs just the skills and how to use them. Very educational to me..some kids may not like the structure of it if they have very little attn. span~we used it with our therapist and let her watch it through a few times and then we worked on one skill at a time and model it with our own scenerios and had her practice with us and master it before going on to the next skill. Sarah loved it though and wanted it:) It also teaches self control and how to self calm when upset:) I would try one and see what you think..it is much cheaper than therapy and some of the other teaching dvd's out there are so over priced it's absurd. If you lived closer you could borrow mine..I have two out to consultant and another mom right now..Sarah still likes them and knows the kids in them by name already:) They are not a cure but a teaching tool to help our kids in this very hard to teach area...I wish they had 20 vol. sets of them for social skills..I would get them:) I promise I am just a consumer too~no kickback for endorsing these ...I used them and loved them and other moms I told about loved them too. Look at their website and see their examples..plus they give your free printables too:)
Hi, thanks everyone. I think I made the right decision when I ordered the DVD last night. My son Jake is 7 1/2 and going to be fully mainstreamed next year into second grade but he still struggles socially so I thought the DVD might help, especially during recess.
Yes, I've seen the Watch Me Learn dvds but I thought the Model Me Kids focuses more on social skills whereas the Watch Me Learn dvds focused more on language. Am I right? Jake's language is fine he just needs the social fine tuning at this point. I was also interested in tips on how to control self-stim behaviors at school.
Thanks again!
