?’s about 1st year of life vaccinations | Autism PDD

Hello all.

My second son is due in eleven days, and as a mom who's first child changed after his MMR vaccine, I have some concerns.

First off, let me say that I am not against vaccinations, I just don't agree with the amount given to a baby in his first year of life.  I am not working after the birth, so I don't have to worry about him immediately receiving certain shots to be accepted into a day care program.

I would like to be able to stretch the first year of shots over two years or so, and am asking for any experience of parent's who have done this with their own children.  I'd rather have my son get poked a few extra times than to risk having another child with autism; none of us can say for sure that vaccinations had absolutely nothing to do with it.

It seems that the MMR is not given in single doses, is this true?  I have an immunization schedule, but don't know what shots I can delay and which of the triples I can get singly.  I would appreciate any help in this.

Thank you,

Yolanda

Hello Yolanda,

I don't have any information on which immunizations can be delayed or which ones can be given in single doses. I do remember talking to another mother a while back who told me that she insisted that her son be given his immunizations in single doses and later than they usual give them. I think she wanted to wait until her son was atleast 2 years old before starting them and all given in single doses.  If wish I knew then what I know now. My son is now 8 years old and dx'd with PDD-NOS and now possibly Aspergers and ADHD.  At the time I thought I was being a responsible parent by having my son get his immunizations as recommended by the doctor.  I'll always wonder if he had been given the immunizations later and only in single doses would have made a difference.

Hello:

I have the same concerns that you have.  My son is 29 months and has autism and I have a 9 month old.  I have spoken to my children's dr and to other mothers about this.  One mother who is in charge of our "Family Connetion" program had her dr. order seperate doses of the MMR.  I too will have my youngest son given a seperate dose of Rubella, etc.  Some dr's will not do this, but most local health departments will.  Also my dr. suggested if I wanted, was to wait and give the MMR shot when he was older.

FYI:  The MMR shot is given at 18 months and again at 4 years of age.  I will not be givening my 29 month old (Jack) the MMR shot when he turns 4.  Will only give him the Rubella.

Angela, Kids on the spectrum are never diagnosed with 2 different spectrum diagnoses. They always dx with the one that has the most characteristics. So he would have either PDD-NOS OR Aspergers. To have aspergers he can never have had a significant speech delay. Now if 2 drs diagnose 2 different ways one's observations are off. The kids can have PDd NOS with asperger like characteristics though.

As far as always wondering I know that feeling but you have to try to put it behind you or it will eat you alive.

Yolanda, and anyone else thinking through this...... First off ASK FOR THIMEROSAL FREE VACCINES. They can be gotten although they may cost more.

Second the MMR CAN be gotten seperately but it is extremely difficult and most Dr's will say it cant be done. There was a link I had here at one time about seperating it and how to get it I will have to see if I can find it again.

If nothing else I suggest ONE immunization a visit at least a month  or more apart from the other vaccine and my personal choice is also to wait. My youngest stopped getting her shots after 9 months when I found out of the possibility and having know what happened to my son. When I started again she was 5 and going into kindergaten and I did the shots about 6 weeks apart.

You can go to www.unlockingautism.org and call their National call center listed for info  or email Nancale@aol.com and put Immunizations in the subject line and she will help direct you to info
