Melatonin

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

Has anyone tried this? About 6 months ago my Dev. Ped recommended this for my son because of his sleep issues. I tried it, but I couldn't find it in liquid form, so I bought the pills and crushed them up. I don't think he was receiving what he should have and it didn't work. Well, about a month ago I found the liquid form and I can't ever begin to tell you how awesome my kid sleeps now! He's not up tossing and turning, getting up turning all the lights on, or raiding the pantry....he's SLEEPING!!

My doc did say it's a 50/50 it works and not to give more than 3mg a night. If it doesn't work the first week it prob. will not at all!

I just thought I would share.

Parents swear by it..even my mom wanted me to try it..I like my clonazepam:) But for our kiddos it is highly recommended:) So glad it works..I have also heard parents doing epsom salt baths at night (bag at walmart/ cvs) calms kids at night and helps with stims...

ok i want to try melatonin but just to try to put him to bed earlier. is that ok ? what should i give him? can you give me a direct link of the saem product you buy? thanks

Good luck!

We've had my son on this for about 6 months now and it works GREAT!

I give him only .25 ml (he weighs 35 pounds) an hour before bed time and he is OUT COLD by the time I put him down. It is a God send!

He's now in bed asleep every night by 8:30. This is a child that I could NEVER get to sleep before 11PM, would wake 2-4x a night and still get up at 6AM. Now he rarely wakes before 7AM and if he does wake up during the night, I just give him a tiny bit more melatonin and within the hour he's asleep again.

THAT IS EXACTLY how my son was, but now I'm a little worried. My doc said 1-3 mg. He's only 29 pounds (a freekin' peanut for 4 years old)! I hope I'm not giving him too much!

I was told if I gave it in the pill form to do 1mg. In the liquid, I was told only .25ML to start. If that didn't work, I could up it to .5ML. I gave him a little more a couple times and didn't see any difference.

I would double check with your Dr how much you should give in liquid vs tablets.

Too much may cause the child to have nightmares I've heard.

my son's dev. ped doesnt believe in any kind of medication unless the kids is around 7 of age and has issues in school. my son use to wake up for hours after midnight before 3, it stopped and he would sleep longer.  since school started it got better but sundays is the hardest day to get him going again...he goes to bed late goes sundays he gets his afternoon nap and then his bedtime is ruined and goes to bed real late like 11pm and by monday for school he is very tired.

Melatonin is not a medication. It's a natural hormone. Many children on the Spectrum don't produce enough of it which is why they have sleep problems.

I want to let you know that I've been giving this to both my son's ages 6 & 8 for the past two years. I've found from my personal experience that Foodlion store brand of Sundown works the best. Its cheaper but comes in microgram form Nick DX Austism/PPD/Asperger sleeps better on this than anything his doctors have given him.im going on vacation in july so i will buy melatonin as calms forte seems not to be working now.

I need some advice.  My 2 1/2 year old daughter was diagnosed with autism back in December.  She never had any problems with sleep until about 2 months ago to where she would wake up around 2 a.m. and stay up until 5 a.m.  At first, this would happen once every 2 weeks or so, now the past week it happens almost every night.  The only new thing I have done is start her on SNT.  Could this be a side effect?  Does anyone have any suggestions??  Is melatonin necessary??  Can I get it at a local store like GNC?  Any answers would help.

Thanks!

mom to 2 1/2 yo daughter with autism/high functioning

Here are the melatonin sold in GNC

They got liquid ,cherry flavor ones etc... melatoin i heard it does help kids sleep through the night ,esp. for those who wake up between those late hours until dawn. I will be trying it next week.

I have found that GNC doesn't help with nick and I've had him on melatonin for awhile now.The melatonin that works ( I call it a god send) is Sundown brand trust me this comes from many trials and mistrials with big expensive kinds but that one is the absolute best.Yes Nick is on sleep medication but i back it up with melatonin and I've found the he sleeps better and has a more restful sleep.good luck sundown is found at many local foodlion stores and no i'm not a rep just a mother whose tried and made mistakes with other brands

can u give us a link?hi, our son was prescribed melatonin , they only seem to have the capsules, which is little beads inside, so i open it and put it in a spoon full of honey, jam e.t.c, this goes down a treat with h, his sleep is sooooooooo much better, he's the 1st asleep at night now and rarely comes down- before he was reading so much to try to get him to nod off, he'd read an entire range of roald dahl books in a couple of weeks!!, ( he's  6  )i was astounded to know and felt bad that he  couldnt sleep , i must say i was a bit worrried about side effects at first, but the paed reassured me, it is a hormone we release in the brain that helps us to differentiate between night and day. its given for jet lag too apparently!!!
i read they either they have too much or too little in an autistic kids brain so this balances things.
its the best thing i ever could have done for him, hes not so tired any more and concentration is better ( on a good day lol!!)

Here is the link that I found but its for sales and not their actual website but you can get a feel of what the bottle looks like.My Nick takes 4 each night and yes he chews them they apparently have no bad taste .He can take up to 6 but I have never had to give him that many.

I give my son a liquid and he takes it with NO issues and trust me, my kid has issues with EVERYTHING we try to give him!

He only gets .25 ml of the liquid each night a half hour before bed. (He is only 3 and weighs 35 pounds)

Here is the brand I buy for him:

Melatonin Liquid Orange by Source Naturals - VitaminShoppe.com

oh thanks, i will be ordering today. but my son is 4 now,how i know the amount i should give him? he is 50 pounds

Hi Guys!

Well, the deal with my son and Melatonin is, his speech therapist told me about it and after clearing it with my doctor I thought I would try it.  Ed would not sleep through the night and would get up and sing while turning his ceiling fan on and laugh alot.  He has a voice that carries big time.. then during the day he would be difficult and didn't respond to therapy.  So I tried a 1/4 of a 3 mg pill to start and he seemed to take to that pretty good until we saw his pediatric neurologist whom told us to just give the 3 mg pill to him after he eats and before bedtime.  Since I have been giving him that, he falls asleep and stays asleep throughout the night within a half hour to 45 minutes after giving it to him.  It's been working great for us..

Good luck with it whomever has questions or concerns.

Before I forget, how we got the melatonin in Eddie?  We were told to crush it up and put it in his food, applesauce or yogurt.  Then as we were doing it, he got annoyed with that, so I was starting to assume he wouldn't take it.. then my husband suggested to try giving it to him whole for him to chew it down, I said he would never do that.. and sure enough, due to his sensory issues, that's the only way now he will take it.. I give him the pill and he chews it like a vitamin..
