Mould and autism | Autism PDD

I know when my oldest daughter was exposed to mold on a camping trip (cabin had it on ceiling and she slept in a top bunk the whole week) her immune response to it caused uncontrollable IBS in her and she has been on meds since...this was over 5 years ago~scary but true!

I DO believe mold can contribute to autism...in fact I think it contributed to my dd's autism.   About 6 months after she was born, I did some major cleaning in our moldy basement.  That same week I devloped some major health issues, which I have later found out are autoimmune in nature.  Around the same time my dd started losing her great personality, and regressed into autism.

Mold is toxic, and can assault the immune system.  Both dd and I have made improvements by detox programs, but we have a way to go yet.  There is a yahoo group called sickbuildings that discusses mold related sickness, and there are several members who have autistic children that are believed to have regressed due to exposure to mold toxins.  I think mold is one of many neurotoxins that can contribute to autism, (along with a genetic pre-disposition). JMHO

I met today one mum with her autistic daughter and  she told me that she is 100% sure that cause for autism for her daughter is a mouldy house they lived when she was born. I did not know what to say.

I was wandering what do you think about this, and have your kids have been exposed to mould during their early childhood?

I have never heard of this before.

I have never heard of mold.. The only thing i know that mold can cause is asthma..It was in our case one thing anyway.. My kids were sick from the old house we lived in it had mold..  Not sure if there is a connection but now a days it can be anything since we really do not know 100% anyway..

seems like people are always loking for somewhere to place blame ... a thing in the environment, another person (handling during labor and delivery) or THEMSELF.

Not a healthy pastime.

Mold is everywhere.   Always has been.  Always will be.

In the 80's everyone was freaked about radon.  In the 90's it was carbon monoxide.  Now it's mold.  Autism does not come from mold exposure.  Just MHO.

I seriously doubt it - the thing is ASD Is so darned mysterious that anything could be the casue of it

TV, Fries, Mold

If Mold casued ASD-  every kid in India would have it since the houses there are so old - no one in India ever talks about lead poisoning and asbestos and all that stuff though all the houses are old and the safety standards are far less rigid .But ASD is just as common in the US as it is in India

I really doubt it too. Lung/breathing problems, sick alot yes, but autism? I have a hard time buying that one.

Certain kinds of mold can cause all kinds of issues.  A colleauge of mine had a new house built 6 years ago.  After they were in the house while (less than a year), his wife was getting her period for 3 weeks at a time with almost no break and chronic headaches, all three children had multiple ER trips for asthma attacks, severe bronchiolitis, nose bleeds, headaches.  The youngest, who was two, seemed to be regressing developmentally and losing words.  My colleague himself was getting chronic headaches but was least effected as he was home the least due to work.  He eventually found, after repeated questions from doctors/hospitals, that the contractor who built the house put the roof on incorrectly and a toxic mold had formed under the roof.  They had to move out of the house into an apartment, lay out k of their own pocket to fix while they sued the builder (check your homeowners, most have added exclusions for mold in the past 10 years due to situations like this).  My colleauge was even on the local news because of this.  After 18 months they finally got back in their house.

Now, 6 years later, they are all fine.  Once they were removed from the situation they all went uphill quickly and the children did not suffer any long term consequences.  The child who appeared to be losing language is now as NT as can be and bounced back quickly.  However, it's hard to say what might have happened longer term if they didn't get out of there when they did.  With many toxins, if caught early enough the effects are reversible but it's hard to say what might happen with prolonged exposure.
