I know in our school, play skills are implemented and assessed by the SPED teacher. Wish I knew more about it at an academic level as this is also a concern of mine! (As it should be of ALL parents of school-agers, IMHO, not jsut of autistic kids!!!).
How old is your daughter?
Hi ,
I have been trying for some time to get the school district to buy into my daughter's needs for social and play skills development. They finally got a behavioral therapist to go into the classroom and assess my daughter through obeservation, parent and teacher interview, using the adaptive behavior assessment system second ed. and HELP Preschoolers checklist. How valid is this type of assessment and how do I interpret the adaptive behavior assessment system. The checklist to me appeared not very appropriate and kind of general. In your experience what would be the most appropriate means of facilliating my daughter's social and play skils and what professional would be the most appropriate to determine an appropriate plan.
Thanks,
Natalie
Natalie -- This is a huge question that I really cannot answer here (especially since my time these days is very limited since I started doing an internship in NYC, two hours away). I'd speak with the assessor and see what s/he thinks and if what is said jives with what you see. I'd also start another thread that flags the play skills issue and is not just directed at me bc I think the other members of this forum will give you excellent answers, too. I think you're on the right track to be most concerned about your daughter's social skills, though. My daughter will be five on June. I am not familiar with"SPED" teacher. Where are you located. I am in NJ. Thanks for your reply.

SPED is shorthand for Special Education. SOrry for the shorthand.
