Zayzer (and if you have school age-child)

Zayzer, I just read another post, where you noticed things were missing in your DC's file.  (I hope that things work out for you - this is truly the most disturbing aspect of raising our children: the complete lack of understanding or compassionate or regard for the law or our children)

I just went through this same thing...and would urge EVERYONE to check your children's file EVERY YEAR.  I found important medical records missing - which provided the 'excuse' for my DS not progressing.

I keep complete and thorough records, always have, and was able to write a 4 page letter to the Super, cc'd the Regional Super at the DOE and anyone else.  This letter included 15 attachments of missing information.  FIFTEEN.

Check your children's file, but more importantly, keep good records.  If you don't, if I hadn't, I wouldn't be in the position I am now.

CHECK YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL FILE EVERY YEAR.
(additionally, when I DID check the file...there were actually 3...school file, special ed file and a health file - check them all)

Ask to remove things that don't belong, and write the letters you need to in order to add what needs to be added.

I placed too much trust in the school.  My daughters are in the same school system and things have always been wonderful, but they are nt.

I agree 100%.  Keep good records.  We did not.  I figured everything we needed would be in his file  and we would someday get around to getting his records.  About every bad thing you could do we did and are now trying to get it all straight.  Not possible.

There is actually a paper in the file that has his dx as asperger's syndrome.  My son is classic autism.  Non verbal.

Keep good records and make sure the ones the school keep are accurate.

Don't make the mistakes I did. Get the book From Emotions To Advocacy.
