Hi Kristie and welcome I am so glad you found this board I felt the same way when I found it and it is very helpful. Even if you don't have a question it is nice just to read what is going on with other people so you don't feel so alone!! I don't have any experience with hyperlxia but I find it very interesting. My son Nick is 5 and was diagnosed 7 months ago as HFA. Nice to meet you.

I just wanted to welcome you to the board! Yes this is a great place! Since finding this site, I have checked into other autism boards/chats, and they really aren't very good or helpful so far. I hope you find what you need here for advice and support.

I'm so happy I found you guys! I have spent the last 2 days reading, reading, reading. In all of your posts, I hear my own story.
Since my daughter was dxed 2 years ago, I have felt so alone. I spent so much time researching online. I can't believe I never found this board before. I know NO ONE else who has a child like mine and where I live there are no specialists that I can find. I've been dying to connect with someone...anyone who can relate.
I'm probably gonna drive you guys crazy with questions and theories and ideas. Mostly questions.

Do any of you have a child who is hyperlexic?

Kristi
mother of Jodie,7,HFA or AS(to be determined), Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Hyperlexia. Thanks guys.
Michelle, I'm located between Chattanooga and Knoxville TN. Thanks for the links. I've been clicking like crazy.

KristiHi Kristi!
Welcome.....I know how you have been feeling!     For years we felt very isolated especially when no one understood what  my son's problem was.   It took years to dx him but finally after our ST found out about Asperger's  (6 yrs ago)  on the web.....we knew we had our answer!    Then we had to find a Dr who would actually dx it....noone around here had heard of it.    We had to educate the medical community!    anyhow,   My now 16 yr old son was hyperlexic and dx with AS.   The hyperlexia  adds to the confusion because they seam so bright ....like baby geniouses in many ways and yet he couldn't understand our simple requests!   Just to let you know.....he still loves to read.....even in languages he doesn't know (which is kind of what being hyperlexic is like)    although it has made learning spanish in high school easier for him than the other kids.   It has its good and bad side!    he is an honor student and does well in school after many years of help from a wonderful ST!    It has been quite  a journey!   When I see him excell now I can't help but get teary remembering how things were for him 10 years ago!    it all is amazing!!

Good luck to you and your DD!    Surround yourselves with positive people!    negative people will get you nowhere!     bonnie.......mom of 4,  2 on the spectrum
Oh, yea!!! I'm so excited to finally meet someone else with a hyperlexic child. Bonnie, I'm gonna drive you crazy with questions.
Jodie doesn't love to read. It's more of a matter of fact thing for her. However, she'll read all day if it's something about her. I can't tell you how many 'books' I've written for her. We use these as tools to deal with behavior.
When did your son first start reading? I always say Jodie was born knowing how. When she first started to talk, it was all words that she was reading. She memorizes everything she sees and hears.

I believe, though it hasn't been determined for sure, that she has ASD. We are going through more testing, evaluations, ect. She gets so fixated on certain subjects. It can last for up to a year, then she's over it. She loved HONDA cars so much at one point that she wanted to kiss every one she saw. That was a dangerous time!    Was it like this for your son?

Kristi
In the above post, I meant to say I belive she has asperger's. I already know it's something or another on the spectrum.

KristiMy son of 13 is hyperlexic, has autism and ADHD. He was writing at 18 months, could read well at two and was spelling at three. He couldn't ask for a drink of water without prompts until he was 6. It was very frustrating having a child who could read but who didn't understand a word of what he read or what we said to him. He has had hours of therapy and now goes to the local high school with an aide. He is top of his Japanese class and is also doing extremely well in Maths and Science.  I am so surprised at his progress because I never thought he would learn to talk to us. The Hyperlexia seems to help with the therapy and the high IQ also helped his outcome. His IQ is in the top 2% but he still needs supervision to get dressed in the morning, LOL.
