My son is extremely hyper in school they had to give him the teachers chair so he wouldn't use his as a rocking chair. He always has to be doing something whether running, moving his fingers, rocking chairs, jumping on beds, he's too much.
My son Takoda is HFA and I have never considered him hyper, but he does get very active when him stims. His latest is running in place with his hands flapping madly. He can be perfectly calm one minute and then look like a caffine overdose the next.
Nelle My son is what I would consider...hmmmm.....very active..LOL But I have an older son with ADHD and boy he is actually HYPER. There is a fine line between very active and hyperactivity though...LOL Karrie Both are mine are very hyperactive. But Jeffrey also has adhd and add. And Gabe should be dx'ed with adhd. They get easily overstimulated. I also have to watch what kind of foods and drinks I give them too. Like last night Jeffrey didn't sleep at all and Gabe got up at 3 this morning. And right now, both are asleep but of course I can't go to sleep. Figures. Tammy Both my possible PDD-NOS and my NT child are hyperactive. I was also an extremely hyperactive child. My children tend to spend the evening chasing each other around in circles in some variety of play (trucks, animals, plan ole fighting). We can only hope that both of them are like me and more able to control and focus the energy as they get older (around 8-10 years old) Is anyone faced with a super hyperactive child with autism. I was always under the impression that the majority of children with autism are more quiet. Kelly WELCOME TO THE BOARD KELLY!!!
I have to say, that reading through these posts, I feel a lil lucky that our Son Tony (9 y/o HFA) is a quiet child, but he's also very social as well. He's NOT hyperactive unless he's having a meltdown.......which doesn't happen very often, but when it does....OH BOY!! God Bless you & keep you safe! LINDA...aka Tony'sMom...aka MWN64 My daughter tends to be on the hyperactive side. We are working w/ OT to help w/ some of the issues, especially calming herself at night so she can go to bed at a reasonable hour. My daughter drives us insane... Whether it's her just not sitting still, running back and forth...at the recommendation of the OT we were seeing, we got a small indoor trampoline...it would help is she used it, but she does so only rarely now Our biggest thing with her right now is talking, talking, talking....over and over and over again...bout the same subject. It does wind down, so instead of talking in sentence she usually starts to repeat the same word, over and over and over again. It's very agitating. I hate to say I'm frustrated with my child, I feel like such a bad parent for getting frustrated. I mean, we've tried Ritalin (that made her very angry, she was having extreme angry outbursts). We had her on Clonidine for about 4 months....it helped with her sleep for a while but eventually that didn't work either. So we weaned her off of that....we temporarily tried benedryl cause she was worst when she didn't get sleep. Which is often. We even tried Magnesium/Calcium supplements......which did calm her down for a short while. And I didn't feel bad about using it cause it was only a vitamin. She's always climbing on the furniture....like right now....I don't know what to do sometimes.....it's just...very very.... Hard. I totally get the need for peace and quiet....and maybe for just a moment to have my child actually listen to me....you know.
What we've been learning about kids on the spectrum is that there is no
one tendency that the majority show (some are social, some not; some
are verbal, some not; some are active. some not) -- each and every one
seems to be unique in his or her own precious way.
I agree with both Karrie and Kellie, my son is SUPER DUPER ACTIVE LOL. we too are using different techniques with his OT and have seen some improvement, the ABA has also helped when it comes to sitting and attending, he can now sit and attend for about 30 mins during OT and ST and about 15 mins during classroom activities. it's not much for some people but for us, it's huge!!
Welcome!
I know what you mean! It's VERY hard when these kids are running
around and around and around. Luke is nonverbal, but he IS
"vocal" so he'll be running in circles and singing loudly (and out of
tune
) "LALALALALALA" and he'll stop
briefly when I tell him to, but then it'll start again a few minutes
later! Even when we eat dinner, he's constantly fidgeting in his
chair, whether it's kicking his seat, or rocking back and forth, or
playing with his fork ... it drives us crazy sometimes!!
Don't feel like a bad mother for this getting you frustrated every now
and then -- we're only human and these feats of activity ARE
annoying!! Especially when they occur for the majority of the day
and all you want is a few blissful minutes of peace and quiet!!
Kellie
