New to SiteHi ~ I'm in Bloomingdale and hoping to move to Naperville because they have AWESOME support for Autistic children there...AWESOME...the schools from what I hear are FIRST RATE as far as special needs are concerned! If you contact Little Friends, Inc. I'm sure they can put you in touch with all kinds of Resources. http://www.littlefriendsinc.com/home.asp Here's another for resources: http://www.autismcommunityconnection.com/local.htm Good luck! Hello, I am a new member looking to gain as much knowledge and support for my son who has FINALLY been diagnossed with Asperger's Syndrome. I am so relieved because I have been blown off for so long. He is now 9 years old and we have been struggling since preschool. He has been called immature, spoiled, "bad" , "hard-headed", troubled, etc. I have been criticized because his behavior was a result of my "babying" him and not disciplining him enough. Upon entering school, he began having meltdowns, crying spells, covering his ears, and slowing progressed to suspensions for running away from noises, refusing to following alternate schedules, etc. All of these behaviors, of course, have made it difficult to keep friendships, etc. Anyway, after spendin more than enough on medications for ADHD, depression, mood stabilizers and three psychologists, a new psychiatrist has diagnosed him with the help of our normal pych. Now, he can get the help that he needs. My boy is a sweetheart and is so bright that he even said" I 'll be so happy when all of these doctors stop asking the same questions over & over & over" Well, thank goodness, we can move on to taking some action!! The thing that I don't understand is that his school wants to keep him in regular ed with a 1:1 aide for support. I am sure that this is not going to work any longer. In the meanwhile, this has taken a toll on my marriage, my daughter (14) and my life (I am in school completeing my education degree). We are in Illinois (Naperville) and are looking for support groups, websites, programs, summer activities to help my sweetie. I would also like to find him some playgroups or social skill groups within my area. Thank you for opening your forum to me and others who are new to this. |
