specific schools for autism/asperger’s st | Autism PDD

i'm new to the internet support system, but have gone as far as i can go with our local school system in indiana.  i am more than willing to relocate, and in fact have researched the wake county schools in nc.  i am not fixed upon this state or district, however, as of course the educational plan comes first.  since i am lucky enough to be self employed location is not necessarily a factor.  i'd like to find specific schools for autistic students, but would settle for an exceptional program within the mainstream classrooms.  i'm open to any suggestions or thoughts.  my twins are 8, and both have asperger's.  daniel's is more severe, so he has been relegated to the state hospital classroom for "behaviorally challenged students" of any persusion.  although he does perform better in that inclusive environment than in a mainstream classroom with his sister, it is a short term solution at best.  is there a nationwide directory of schools?  even a comprehensive website would be helpful, although i've not found one yet.  thanks for any suggestions! No. There is no directory. You can search this site putting "state" into the search engine and you can review past posts on which states are best.  There are few places where there are consistently good programs for autism.  Where in Indiana are you located? One day....I really hope that there are schools for kids with aspergers, high functioning aspergers in every state and in more localities....

We're having the same problems here in VA....there just isn't a place for these kids.

if anyone else is interested, you can contact summit through www.summitacademies.com

wish us luck, and we will do the same!

wow- that is pretty cool that what you are looking for is closer than you thought!  I have recently had that experience as well (divine intervention) - for us it's an ABA school program (also private)

Did you happen to save your research on the several schools?  I would be interested to see where/how many/which states?

I've never really wanted to live in OH....but that school looks like a possibility for many....and I do have relatives there.  HHHmmm...I really want to move to ID though. I hope not....it didn't seem that way to me...they seemed to be really looking around for the right school.

Why do I get the sense this may have been a solicitation How many schools were like this in OH?  I'm truly curious.  I'm looking at High School grades with schools that teach to the student as a whole.  Not a private school.

i believe there were about a dozen around the state, some with only elementary/middle school programs but when i spoke with the director in cincinnati he mentioned that he could write a curriculum for secondary grade levels to be completed individually.  he also was fairly certain that another building would be added within the next couple of years that would serve as a high school facility.  i'm sorry i didn't save some of my search data but if you google schools for autistic students you'll probably eventually find the same material i did.  california had a high percentage, as well as new england, but i think there was one in orlando & texas.  as for the comment about my soliciting, i'm not going to dignify that with much of response except to comment that you must be a pretty cynical person.  how sad.  if any more optimistic parents would like any more info i'll pass on what i learn.

I think the reason that the poster thought that you were advertising is because you hadn't been back and only posted twice...which happens when schools are spamming the boards....so let's all be friends and thanks so much for posting about the schools in OH.

You hit it on the nose Virginia (and thank you for the clarification).

It has nothing to do with being optimistic or pessimistic.

gryffyth, you must understand that sometimes...well...we get some not so "ok" people on this board trying to exploit people in emotionally desperate situations or when we are feeling at the end of our rope.  You will see posts of this nature all over the place.  Someone posted the other day about a supplement and someone immediately took it as being a solicitation.  I didn't see it that way, but this other person did.

I thought that something might be up because you posted, seemed to have found a very quick solution and did not come back when there were people responding.

I am sure how you might understand that people on this board are VERY protective of one another.  I have found this and I am pretty darn new here.

Kudos to you for getting your needs met and doing what you can for your family.

I hope you will find this board a great resource and be one as well.
