DDS Nightmares (not literally) | Autism PDD

Sorry, we've been -so- busy for the summer, it's nonstop chaos all the time. Lol. Yay for Mt. Dew! We have to have surgery on the 14th, and Mom is a little freaked out about it. It's not a big deal, really, oral surg. couple teeth out, few fillings, ect, but in my mind it's become this huge, frightening issue for me, with all these "omg what if he never wakes up" kind of not-likely worries. But anyway

What I was wondering is what works good for a toothbrush? I mean--we've tried the infant slide-over-your finger ones, okay, and all i can say about that experience is.. OW. Biting is a favorite pasttime when it comes to oral hygene.

the spinning battery-operated or whatever kind is out too, because he locks his jaws shut and screams bloody murder whenever i get near him with one-- i spose the vibrations or the sounds or something send him over the edge.

Regular toothbrushes are good for clamping one's jaws down on too, or else trying to shred the bristles with one's teeth..So I'm kind of at a loss.. All I can think to tell the Dentist is.. "if you figure out how to NOT use the jaws of life for your hand OR the toothbrush, and STILL get this kid's teeth clean, PLEASE let me know.."

right now i'm using one of those foam mouth cleaner things that they give at the hospital, because at least when he goes lock-jawed on it, it doesn't hurt him at all...Suggestions? Thoughts? Similar horrific stories, so I can at least laugh? (Lol)

Thanks.

It used to be a huge ordeal to brush Tony's teeth, but he's 9 y/o now, so I guess he's just surrendered to the fact that it's GONNA be done. I know what you mean about the battery operated ones, we tried that kind too, Tony freaked out! I mean you'd have thought we were trying to kill him or something!! I thought by NOW that he'd be brushing his own teeth, but his dentist said that WE should do it for a while longer because usually when he sees young autistic kids who HAVE brushed their own teeth, they decay, because the child doesn't do it good enough or long enough.

GOOD LUCK with your search for the "right wya" or "right brush" for your Son!

God Bless you & keep you safe!
