Speech from Public when attend Private | Autism PDD

Oh Tzoya that's a mess if our SD is supposed to pay.  And, it is not the SD that will be placing him in a private school. It would be our decision and it's a completely typical pre-school.  We're actually tossing around the idea of keeping him enrolled in his current pre-school which he attends in the afternoon 4 days a week.  We would send him to the private pre-school for the morning session and send him to his current pre-school in the afternoon (not everday).  We talked about just sending him on the days he has speech.  Not too sure.  Might send him to private pre-school 3 days a week and current one 2 days a week.

Tzoya - do you know if they can "kick him out" of the public school if he doesn't attend every day?

I'd see if you could work out a 3 day a week schedule with the school district. Some public preschools do that.  Doing both public therapeutic preschool and private typical preschool can be the best of both worlds.  The two district situation is brand new, and each state may end up dealing with it differently.  This remains to be seen.   Can you direct me to the reference for this new law?

We are tossing around the idea of taking Anthony out of his current pre-school setting.  He currently receives 45 min of speech per week and 1/2 hour social work per month.  The social work is essentially a non-issue because I had to fight tooth and nail to keep the paltry 1/2 hour a month because the social worker doesn't believe he needs any help in this area.  Well if she doesn't think he needs it what type of service is she going to provide?

Anthony has a home ABA program and the psychologist thinks we should put him in a typical pre-school.  Yesterday I was talking with my youngest's speech therapist (he is a speech path for Chicago Public Schools).  He said if we send him to private school we are essentially rejecting the IEP.  The school system then does not have to provide us with the amount of speech in his IEP and can knock it down to 20 min per week if they want.  He also said that the law changed last year and if he goes to a private school, the public school district that the private school is in has to provide the speech therapy.  We live in the city of Chicago and the pre-school we'd likely send him to is in a neighboring suburb.

I'm completely confused on how this works.  Any experience with this?

mamajot39206.5792824074You are not the only one who is confused.  Parents who place their kids in private schools need to by wary.  This does NOT apply to school districts who place kids in private schools. This ONLY applies if the parents pay the tuition and it is their decision, not the SD's.  It seems that the school district in which the private school is LOCATED will be calling the shots and the school district that the parents live in will by paying, but the law isn't clear.  Guess there's be PLENTY of suits over this.
