Expressive Language | Autism PDD

My 3 1/2 year old has basically no expressive language. His receptive language is above his age. He has been evaluated and as of yet has not been diagnosed with autism. If he were talking his only symptom would be mild resistance to 3 specific transitions. All other transitions are fine. Communicaiton issues also make potty training slow but not impossible. Does anyone out there have any ideas? He does some sign language.

Does he have any other possible symptoms of asd? Amazing abilities like reading/writing, putting together intricate puzzles, etc. Or does he have any repetive natures? Does he spin, take apart toys to see how they work, is he social w/ adults and children? There are many other parts to autism. I have heard of some children that just have a language disorder as they had speech issues but no other sypmtoms to suggest something further.

Children that have just language impairments, disorders, and delays certainly CAN show other behaviors that look autistic in nature.  This is why I would encourage anyone that has a child with language delays to have a complete evaluation done to rule the spectrum diagnosis in or out.  I have a niece with a speech impairment and when her speech was severe she exibited many behaviors that seemed autistic in nature.

Have you tried using PECS (picture exchange communication system)?  Basically, the idea is to have your child express his needs and wants by showing a picture to you.  You can also teach your child by showing them pictures to demonstrate the steps of doing something (like potty training).  This might help ease his and your frustration.  Good luck.

a combo of PECS and sign language gave us our first few words.. and from there my son just went wild. Good luck..
