I'm getting lost in a sea of paperwork. Before you ask I am from Kentucky and we currently don't have our own autism standards and still follow the federal guidelines for autism. Where do I start to justify an aide for my child for the fall. I have been told by several that he needs one available in the classroom. The main reason is that he needs to understand the instructions of the teacher and he is nonverbal. He is nonverbal and currently uses sign language as his major communication source. I'm getting off topic. Where do I go to see what I am entitled to?
ThanksThank you so much for the information. My computer was messing up and I accidentally kept posting the same question. I'll order the book.
Get the book FROM EMOTIONS TO ADVOCACY. They base their advice on the Federal standards, which Kentucky HAS to follow. Your child's services will be based on his needs. A very small class may be recommended, in which case he might not need an aide. Your job is to ask the team questions, questions, questions. Like "how will he follow directions?" They have to come up with some way to support him based on each question you have. In order to get your son an appropriate education, you will have to find out all about his rights and what you can do to make the schools help him make progress every year. That's why the book I recommended is so helpful.
