high dose fish oil? | Autism PDD

Share

Hi,
I would like to know if anyone here has tried or read anything on the use of high dose fish oil for kids on the autism spectrum. My daughter is 8 with PDD NOS. I strongly believe that supplements and other biomed interventions are the way to go with curing her of this. She is seeing a chiropractor and he is the one that has recommended the fish oil. Not Cod liver oil as that has vitamin D which could accumulate to toxic levels, but refined fish oil with EPA and DHA and in particular Dr. Barry Sears brand (of the Zone Diet) he doesn't sell this product he's just a big believer in it. I have tried it myself and found it has helped my concentration and anxiety immensely. But when it's your child you know you want to find out all you can! Appreciate any help!

I gave my boys Omega Brite fish oil capsules for about 6 months. I couldn't tell any improvement when I gave them, or any worseing when I stopped giving them. I do believe they probably help with overall health, but they were expensive and a pain to give, and I really didn't think they were making a difference in my boy's problems, so I stopped giving them.

The Omega Brite brand is endorsed by Dr. Andrew Stoll, who did a study that showed they help to regulate mood. http://www.omegabrite.com/why/effects.html

Cara,

My 12 year old daughter also was diagnosed with PDD-NOS.  I started giving her DHA by Nordic Naturals, about 3 weeks ago. I started giving it to her at the same time I was weening her from Prozac, which she has been on for 5 years, and Straterra, on for 1 year.  At this point I don't see any changes, but since she's off the Meds. maybe so.(?)

Also, after she's been on the DHA for at least 6 weeks I'm going to start her on something called Dimethylglycine (DMG), while continuing the DHA.  It is also recommended to take Magnesium and B6 with it.

Here is where you can get some more info. on it.  Hope it is of some help to you.

If anyone else has tried DHA for their child please respond!  Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the link. I think your daughter must certainly be doing well on the fish oils! I think they are very beneficial it's just the high dose that I am questioning. I've read on one hand it can make "leaky gut" worse and on the other that it can help GI tract problems! It's so confusing all these supplements and what to try and when. I'm really stuck because I can't find a good Autism doctor in my area-they may be there but even the local email lists I'm on haven't helped if you want to do biomed.

I have heard of the DMG and I know a lot of people do use it for their kids I would certainly want to try it too.
