GRANDMAS ACCEPTANCE!!!![]() For those of you with relatives or friends who don't have a clue, there is hope!! In the past, my mother was in major denial that anything was wrong with her precious grandson. Then when he was diagnosed, she started this whole skepticism thing. I don't know about this autism thing, what is it, if all his tests are negative, then there's no autism, right? I wanted to pull my hair out!!! I would send her articles like crazy, tell her about our therapy sessions, etc.., and JUST RECENTLY, after moving to New York (I'm in FL), no less, she is really starting to understand AND stand up for her grandson! She just sent me an e-mail that said: "You're never going to believe what I"m doing this month, I'm going to an autism march, that's right, go Granny go!" LOL!! She was getting bombarded by these flyers in town and she couldn't ignore them. Isn't that hysterical? Thanks NY!!!
Matty - I posted mine on the other thread about extended families...so far not much support - I disowned my family long ago. They haven't even met Payne...long story.
That is so great!Matty, I'm really happy that your mom has started to accept this diagnosis. Please understand that it is very hard for us grandmas to learn of this. We ache for our child and his/her child, too. I've found myself at times trying to tell my daughter that "NT kids do that too". Or, "That's normal" at this age. I didn't realize how hard that was for my daughter to listen to. I truly was not dismissing her concerns. I was dying inside for my daughter and her baby and hoping against hope that it was all a big mistake, even though in my heart of hearts, I knew there was a problem. Thanks GrammaSusie, so great to get your perspective!! That's what a lot of people need to hear. ![]() |
