Can you tell me how long after you did your intake it took you to receive help with this program? Payne can't get SSI or Medicaid because we make too much money, but he also uses quite a bit of it and some providers will only take kids on it
I wasn't put on a wait list at all. That wasn't even mentioned, although I haven't yet started actually getting services. I suppose I'll see when I want and ask for respite if it is available. http://apd.myflorida.com/area/
How long was your waitlisting? They said that even though Payne qualifies and we're doing the intake tonight that there is a waitlist that he'll be put on. I googled it some older ones say forever (508 years) and some say 2-3 years. At that rate it won't do us a bit of good.
Let's see ...
I sent the information to the agency in January. In February I got a letter that I was approved, on March 2 I had an intake meeting. My service coordinator came over last week and helped to fill out the rest of the paperwork, and she will go in my place with the paperwork for the initial meeting to get everything in place on Thursday. I still haven't yet been switched, but I know it is coming up very soon - probably within the next month. So ... for me from start to implementation I'd say 4 months.
how do you apply? I am in flWe were added to the waitlist - they say between 3-8 years BEFORE he gets ANY services through the medicaid waiver program. She said that it was a state waitlist - I asked if it would be different if we were in a different area of the state. We're on a waiting list here in Indiana. I was told to expect a wait of 7-10 years. My son need the help now, not just when he's 17-20.we applied for katie beckett and it took us almost 6 months to be approved and get a letter, but when we did it showed that he had been covered for longer and we just didn't know it!
Thank you so much for the information! NY sounds like a great place to be!
Wow, NYMomof3! 4 months from start to finish? What kinds of services do they offer? Also, what are you getting from the school district?
I'm very interested in what the other states are doing. In Hawaii, the waiver doesn't give you skills training; you only really get respite or "personal assistance". You have to request skills trainers and 1:1 therapy from the schools, but you don't always get it.
Thanks for the info in advance!

Wow! A post from the past dug up. I'd be glad to answer. With Medicaid, I get all his doctor visits paid for 100%, no copay and no monthly insurance fees. I have a medicaid service coordinator that visits me and Nicky once a month to make sure I am happy with the services he is getting. She also calls the school and visits there. She comes with me to the CSE meetings to make sure he is getting what he should.
I also have a respite worker that comes over and watches Nicky in my home if I need to do something with my other kids and don't thing bringing him is a good idea.
My son is in a TEACCH kindergarten program. There are 6 other boys in his class. He has a 1:1 aide.
He gets ST every date, OT and PT 2x a week. It's a program run by BOCES. The therapists work in the classroom full time, and are all specifically educated in autism.
I'm very happy with the services my son has now.
My son gets SSI and has medicaid as well. His doctro visits are covered 100%. He see's a pediatrician and a developmental pediatrcian. His medication are covered 100% too.
He is doing pre-k right now at AHRC in Bronc, New York, its a very well known school and their main office is in NYC. He receives ST and OT at the school. His class consists of 12 kids, 1 teacher and 3 aides. They also incorporate ABA in class.
Im very happy with their services.
To all the NY moms, do youhave a link of where you can apply for medicaid, and does it go based on income or disability?
Thanks. I could use a link to help the families I work with on Long Island to get it if they qualify.
Go to this site, and from there you can look at the "site map" and find your local service provider agencies. You can call one of them (in my area it was a place called Springbrook), and they will walk you through the process.
I can't believe what I am reading...waiting lists of 7-8 years?
It is really sad to think that people are sitting there....desperately needing services and getting nothing, when in other states, services are excellent and immediate!
Good luck to everyone, and here's hoping that someday, parents of the newly diagnosed have options, resources and information.
ferbiepom - the medicaid waiver is just that ... you get medicaid that waives your income. It is based purely on the disability.
SSI is income based. I was unable to collect SSI because I "make too much money." Ridiculous considering I'm a single mom living week to week ... but ... it is what it is.
