How was your 4th? | Autism PDD

Our town puts on one big fireworks show at the County Fairgrounds right outside of town. It always seems like most of the town is there.

My Mom went this year with me to help with the kids. First she found seats in the grandstands and I told her that wouldn't work because the noise ecoes and it would scare Takoda. So she found an area in the center circle and I tried to explain that we needed a more private area but I was running out of time and they turned down the lights.

Takoda freaked out. He screamed and pleaded with me to leave. My mom wanted to go but I told her it would only be worse to try leaving in the dark with fireworks going off. Takoda would feel like we were running from a warzone. So I insisted we stay.

I held Takoda in my lap and tried to guess the color of the next fireworks. He cried and screamed for the first five minutes and then started telling me what color the fireworks were. He still asked to go several times but he was over the panick.

I know Takoda is very sensitive to loud noises but I hope it doesn't sound cruel to make him face his fear. I think he actually enjoyed part of the show. I had earplugs for him but he didn't like the feel of the plugs so he just pulled them out.

Overall I feel our 4th went pretty well. Hope that yours did too!

We had an amazing 4th! We were invited over to a friend's house about 45 minutes away. My daughter has only seen this friend about 3 times (our boys went to preschool together back in Kansas). My friend invited her neighbors over...so there were about 10 kids altogether..Katie was 2nd to the youngest. The only major stink eye occured with my friend's 2 1/2 year old who happens to share my daughter's  main objective in life.  DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF. She played happily for several hours (I confess, that I pushed her on the swings and followed her around a bit..but she was great..flirting with all the adults, smiling, happy..etc). I wasn't sure how she would do with the fireworks, but decided to try. We were with a group of kids and once the show  began, she just kept saying "oh wow!, oh Wow!" pretty much echoing whatever anyone said around her, but she LOVED it. I thought she might not like the noise, but we picked a spot away from the big commotion because we thought the little one wouldn't like it (he didn't, he fell asleep with his hands covering his ears). I was amazed...Great experience except for getting home at 11:00 and having to get everyone up for school. Hope everyone else had a great time! My daughter was fascinated that she was up and it was dark outside..we need to get out more.

The boys went to a picnic and had fun there.  It was at this island place, which doesn't really look like a island but that is what it is called.  Makes my feet hurt just thinking about that.  After they got home that night I did ask them if they wanted to go outside and see the fireworks and they said no.  I can see the fireworks from my house and not have to pay the bus fair to go to the actual place to see them.

We skipped out on the fireworks this year due to Connor's new found dread of thunder so we decided not to chance it but we were at bbq's all weekend and he was great, he played well ( aswell as can be expected LOL) with the other kids and had a fine time of ruining the adults game of horse shoes ! he went in a "big" pool, only hung out on the ladder but hey, he was in there!  overall, it was agreat holiday weekend but boy, i sure am pooped !!!

Hubby took Tony down to the floodwall where our city had the "big show", then Hubby lit fireworks in our front yard while Tony & I watched. Tony LOVES fireworks NOW, but he didn't always. He was terrified of the noises & the smoke, & he thought we were all going to die if the ashes landed on us. He screamed for what seemed like the entire time, for the first couple of years I'd take him inside the house with me & we'd watch his Daddy light them from inside, but then as he got older, he wanted to be more a part of it all. He has faced alot of his fears...but he's still scared of just about everything. Since we live right across the bridge from Louisville Ky where they have "Thunder Over Louisville", Tony has really gotten in to firworks & airshows.

God Bless all of you & your Families & keep you all safe!
