Have probiotics and vitamins helped?? | Autism PDD

Hi everyone. I have been reading some about probiotics. I am curious to know if this has been helpful to any of you. What kind of changes did you see in your child? I have heard of some children having increased concentration, less irritability, etc... And also, would probiotics be used in addition to a GFCF diet or instead of the diet? And are there any side effects?

Also, is anyone giving their kids vitamin B6? Would this be safe for a 3 year old or is that too young?

I really would like to go to a DAN doctor to have blood tests done to see what my son is deficient in, but will insurance not usually pay for these tests? That seems to be what Ive heard. Also, I have tricare insurance so Im not sure how many DAN doctors accept that.. I am in Jacksonville FL and there is 1 DAN doctor that I know of, but not sure if she accepts tricare..   Any advice on this?

Thanks all for your help!

With Probiotics we have noticed much more normal looking stools and less gas.  Probiotics are to be used with the diet if you need the diet...never in place of.  Probiotics are not like enzymes, which are used to help the body digest gluten/casein.

I first started giving Matthew b6 when he was 4 and he did and still does very well with it.  He was a child who literally seemed to bounce off the walls about 20 hours a day.  After starting b6 he was still a child who was on the go most of the day, but at a much calmer rate.  No longer climbing the walls but still active.

If you are speaking of the DAN! I think you are then she does not accept insurance (most DAN! docs do not) but she will help you to work with your insurance.  She will look over whatever tests she deems necessary and try to send you to labs that are accepted by your insurance (for the tests that she can anyway....some testing is done through specialized labs that do not accept any insurance).

In your topic title you ask if vitamins help....for us they are a godsend

We sent in our own claim forms when we visit, and get back about 60 percent of the visits and tests.

Hi Jennifer!

We did the DAN doctor route when John was between 3-7 years of age.  He was on a combo of supplements, B12 shots, chelation, the gfcf diet....etc.  We are still on the diet and he still gets coromega but we stopped the rest of the supplements.  They helped to a degree and we will give probiotics when he gets an antibiotic....it all really helped his gut and stools.  We saw a dan doctor who wasn't as advanced so to speak....and it was very reasonable (he only charged 0 a visit and tried to run as much as possible through our insurance).  We were convinced by a consultant to see one in Albany NY and the whole visit cost approximately ,000 by the time we were done with everything and would have continued to be very expensive to continue.   In my experience most people with younger kids do the DAN protocol that is when it seems to be most effective.

Good luck!
