FEAT of NC - THE ABA NC resource website: The recent events are from 2004!!!!!  UGH.  That says it all

I have a son who is in special school and using the teacch approach. He is doing fantastic. I always used to favour aba, and even took the ed authority to court to fight for funding, but I have changed my opinion. I think aba is heavy stuff and it did not bring out the best in my child, even though I agree the literature on it is very pursuasive.

Amy

How do you get TEACCH services?  We are on a waiting list for the evaluation- I am guessing that is the first step.  I called and personally talked to someone- and the evaluation was all that was offered.  ??

Our experience with TEACCH is years old... they were involved in the early evaluation with Tony as well.  Shortly after, we signed up for 6 training sessions (I assume it would be considered parent training).  The sessions consisted of parents watching through a 1 way mirror with someone explaining techniques while the therapist worked with the child on various tasks.  As Tony is now 12 and looking at teenage years (perish the thought), I have considered putting him on another waiting list.

It is my understanding that TEACCH is great with the initial evals, and teacher training, but it seems that is it.  I would really love more parent connections over time.  With waiting lists, sometimes it is a moot point to call them over a behavior issue... by the time your number comes up, you have usually figured out a way to work through the issue.

Anyone with experience with TEACCH.... correct me if I am wrong!  PLEASE!

Mary

do you not favour the aba approach?I VERY MUCH favor it.  I was venting that the events in my area are not even close to current----the "recent" training events are from 3 years ago....

Cindy,

That just confirms what we have already suspected... NC is married to TEACCH.  While TEACCH is a good concept, in my opinion, it is NOT a structured program and really can't compare to what I have read about ABA.

Mary

I can understand the difficulty in finding up to date ABA information.  I am an consultant in NC so if you have any questions I will try to help you as much as I can.

Good Luck!
