I am in the midst of a custody issue with my ex husband. My 8 year old daughter has autism, and this is a major issue in serving her needs. I need to locate an attorney in the Jax area who had knowledge of autism and what is best for my kiddo. Any names would be greatly appreciated!Good luck megsma. They are hard to locate. I tried for years here in TX when I finally found one he refused to help me because he was on the board of MHMR.
check these guys out - I don't know anything about them .... but they do a lot of different cases...maybe they could help or direct. It is the legal assistants that can give you the best referrals.
I don't know of an attorney to recommend, but you are on the right track. Getting someone who knows special needs issues is key. I am taking a course right now in advocacy. It's taught by an attorney who is also and Impartial Hearing Officer. She has told us that it's vital that we recommend to our clients who are divorcing that ONE parent is named as the custodial parent and that THAT parent get full control of educational issues WRITTEN INTO THE DIVORCE DECREE. Even in "friendly" divorces where the parents work well in tandem, the "district of parental residence" can become an issue. If the two parents live in two different school districts and have joint custody of the child, each district can claim the other district is responsible for the IEP. You KNOW this never results in TWO districts fighting about wanting to pay for services but about two district wanting to GET OUT OF PAYING FOR SERVICES.
