A small step forward ... | Autism PDD

Just wanted to share ...

Today, at 28 months (and one day) old, Luke started climbing the stairs without holding onto anything and standing fully upright!!  Hooray!   He's also listening to us MUCH better (though he's still not talking ... just his regular babbling).

Of course, with every step forward, there seem to be steps backward.  He does all sorts of stimming these days.  I'm not sure if it's be/c of the new baby or what ... he's added to his repertoire head banging (on the couch, for now), chest thumping (Tarzan in the making??), and bed banging (which occurs in the middle of the night to the tune of his singing "Yay Yay Yay Yay Yay Yay .....")  .  At least I got him to stop doing the latter rather annoying behavior last night by telling him to stop doing it!  Wish that would work for all his behaviors all the time!!

That is so awesome. I totally know what you mean by one step foward and then one or two steps back. Thank God that the foward steps are being taken though!

Way to go Luke!!

Great news! Even w/ the new annoying stims it is worth it when the progress somewhere major isn't it. I know that's what I've seen w/ ds when he started ST. Best wishes for more step forwards!

LOL!  Your post made me remember something that happened w/ Nate when he was a tot.  He was a huge "crib banger/shaker".  We weren't too concerned about it, didn't know then what we know now, just let him do it.  So one day we put him down for a nap and he started shaking his crib, we could hear it downstairs.  2 minutes later there's this huge crash.  We run upstairs, open the door, and there's Nate sitting on his mattress, one 1/2 of his very expensive crib broken right off, the other half still standing.  He looked very confused.  He didn't cry, wasn't scared, just couldn't figure out what happened.

Of course, we had to run out right away and buy another crib because he then became very upset.  It was naptime and he had to lay down.  Yep, even as a baby he was HUGE on routine.  I think he was about 1 at the time.
