Community Preschool Question | Autism PDD

Sorry for yet another question.  In working with my sons current ifsp we need a little info.  He is currently in a special ed class with just 5 spec ed students and also a community preschool paid for by the school district.  We have discussed with the school his next years plan of action and it seems we would all like the same thing with the addition of an extra speech class.  The only problem we have, which we discussed at the meeting, is we do not feel the current community preschool he is in is working for him.  First off he hates going there and during the class session it is so overwhelming for him he has a hard time the rest of the day all the way up until he goes to sleep.  We dont get barely any communication from the school including not getting the communication book filled out, which is in his ifsp.  He gets picked on by clicks (yea there are 3 year old clicks).  The set up of the classroom alone is very overwhelming just in itself.  And also the class structure is horrible.  Out of a two hour class they have a whole hour of free time.  Collin has a very hard time here.  So we requested a different community preschool.  They offered us a different one, which we requested to observe.  So what if this class will not suit him either??  Can we look at other schools that do not contract with the school disctrict and will they pay for any others??  Or do we only get two really bad choices??  The other problem is that they have 6 special needs kids in this community preschool of 17-18 children.  and there is only one aide for all 6 of them.

You can always request anything.  Whether you get it or not depends on many factors, chief of which is your negotiating skills and knowledge of what they OWE your child.  Get the book FROM EMOTIONS TO ADVOCACY and that will help. You can also request a one-on-one aide if you think that will help.  You need to give the District a rationale for everything.  It doesn't sound like the situation now is a good one.  It may also be possible for him to stay home and get intense services (like ABA) instead of going to a useless preschool. It's ALL individual.
