Well we were talking about moving to NC, maybe not now. Yikes.
So frustrated with the rigidity and inability of the system to evolve, if hubby could move, we would have left. We bypass the school system. They seem to take more out of me than the level of help they offer.

Hi! I am in Huntersville, NC. MY EI coordinator did not know what ABA is. We are currently trying to figure out how to pull our resources/adjust our lives to set up a program. My health insurance actually pays (no questions asked) 20 hrs up front- having a HARD time finding someone in-network (United Healthcare).
Where are you in NC and what kind of services do you offer?
PS- we have a transition mtg to the public school this month- I can let you know how good/bad very soon.
Cindy,
I am in the Greensboro/High Point area but I do consult around the state. I offer parent workshops, and private tutoring as well as consulting your entire home program (Find tutors for you, monitor programs, problem solve, etc.) I also serve as a parent advocate for IEP meetings and school conferences that you feel you may need the extra support.
I am quite suprised that your EI was unfamiliar about ABA, as I thought they needed to be aware of the different types of behavior therapy (TEACCH, ABA, Floortime, etc.). That is great about your healthcare but I have never heard of a private company accepting insurance ( I think EVERYONE should offer these services). Personally I can't believe the amount of money parents are expected to shell out for these VITAL home programs. I am currently trying to set insurance up but I am having to jump through many hoops of the NC gov. I do know that a couple providers will accept medicaid as a form of payment.
Good luck with your transition meeting this month. Make sure you fight for as many speech, ot, and pt hours that you feel you will need, if you win that battle now then it will be easier to maintain later. Let me know if you need any help pulling things together.
Have a blessed day!
Aislynn
Hey everyone! I hope you are having a wonderful start to the Easter weekend. Does anyone live in NC? I am curious as to how pleased you are with the services here and how good/bad your school system has been in helping your children. I am an ABA tutor in NC and I am constantly hearing negatives on services here and it is really dissapointing to see so many children left to fall through the cracks due to the bad services they receive, kinda ironic considering the state education motto of "No Child Left Behind"
I want to hear your thoughts on what should be changed and if you don't live in NC It would be great to hear about how successful your states programs are or are not.
Thanks
Aislynn
I live in NC and at this point can not say anything positive about the school. My child was not diagnosised until he was 10. We have been unable to get any services. They have denied his diagnosis. He was diagnosised at a very young age as ODD. They refuse to change his diagnosis. All I get is that "my child will not follow the rules therefore he must be suspended." He is even being suspended for behaviors related to his diagnosis. His grades have dropped and although there are remediation services available, they will not consider him due to his behavior. So no child left behind is only for your perfectly behaved children.
I've been out of town over spring break, and am just now catching up on reading these posts. We are in NC (Randolph County) and my son is in middle school. Through elementary school, I was fairly satisfied with things as the EC teacher is a big supporter of mainstreaming... she worked very closely with the regular ed teachers in placing all her students throughout their day.
Fast forward to this year, and we may as well have moved to Mars. Inclusion was not an option, the teacher has told another parent on more than one occasion that none of her students are getting what they need, and frankly I don't think my son has made ANY progress this year in school.
We are probably moving out of state this summer, so I am just marking time at this point. The only saving grace for my son is that he does receive 24 hours 1:1 CAP services, since he has Medicaid through the Developmental Disabilities waiver. He will lose that when we move, but a better situation in school will more than make up for the loss.
