they always have you bring proof of bank account. Even if they havent decided yet. Its just a thing they have you bring. Your income will count since you are his legal guardian. Who ever the child lives with thier income will be counted. I would take in copies of the child support order and papers stating for child support as to he has not paid any of it. Hope this all helps.
Hi, all,
I'm new to this forum. I am raising a 3-year-old grandson, Alex, diagnosed with PDD. He has severe developmental delays in speech and communication, and mild developmental delays in all other areas. He was in Early Intervention from age 2 until he turned 3 (communication, behavioral and occupational therapies) and recently transitioned to the Public School System where he attends Pre-School Disabled 5 days a week for 2.5 hours.
Case Management over the age of 3 in our state (NJ) is minimal, but the Case Manager I did talk to advised me to apply for SSI and to the State of NJ to have him classified as Developmentally Disabled in order to receive Family Support Services. I did both last month, applying for the SSI on-line, and sending all reports from Early Intervention, CST, Neurological Ped, etc. etc. with medical releases as instructed.
Two days ago, I received a letter from SSI with an appointment date and time instructing me to bring proof of the bank account where I want the payments deposited. Why would they ask for this if he isn't approved yet? I've never been through this before and can't seem to get an answer from SSI. I'm worried I'll take time off work and go to this appointment and not have everything I need and have to take more time off to go back (something I can not really afford).
Also, does anyone know if they count grandparent's income? The Case Manager said no, but I'm not sure. My husband and I both work, and I am Alex's legal guardian. I was awarded custody two years ago after his mom (my daughter) was arrested (drug & alchol related). We receive no support from either biological parent - there's a support order for his father but we've never received anything because he can't be located, he took off when Alex was an infant. His mother, who is in a recovery program (thank God) doesn't work (she does not live with us).
Any advice, support or past experiences would be greatly appreciated.
