where can I get b12 shots? omega ? | Autism PDD

Share

Hi, my daughter is 20 mos old and has been diagnosed with PDD. She is non verbal ( NO words excpet bablling), does not point either.

I have been reading about b12 and omega 3.

1. How can I get B12 shots? Who would give these? I live in NJ.

2. Which fish oil/omega 3 do you suggest? In CVS , I can get 'organic milled flax seed' which can be mixed in with her cereal - is that good enough? Or should she take more?

I tried to read various posts but I don't really have a clear answer on how much to give and what to give! PLEASE HELP!!

not sure about the b12 ...

but I use flax seed....i get bulk raw organic flax,,,and grind mine fresh each day,,i use a mini coffee grinder and it works great! I personally eat 3Tablespoons each day, while my son, who is 6 eats about 1--

just don't cook with flax, or you will loose the omega's and you need t o grind them, eating them raw will only pass through the digestive system whole.

i have no idea the amount you should give a child that young,,,hopefully others will chime in here! good luck!

You can go to the Autism Research Insitute website and find a DAN doctor in your area.  You are need to get the methyl b-12injections that can only come from a compounding pharmacy.  CVS and othe rmainstream pharmacies provide cobalamin b-12 (I think).

Flaxseed oil is good.  If your looking for Cod liver oil or fish oil, you want to make sure you find a company that provides a pure form of it (ie they can extracy the mercury or other toxins commonly found in fish).  Nordic Naturals, Coremega, Eskimo Kids are just a few good ones.

Dr. Neubrander Please be careful when playing around with shots of vitamins.  Too much of a vitamin in some cases can be harmful.
Make sure you do lots of research, and get more than one opinion from different professionals.

Please look at both sides and make sure that your daughter actually needs more b 12 in her diet.  Also if he does, consider other options before dishing out injections to you child.

Take care.
Allegra39181.8196296296Coromega is awesome for the omega 3!!!!!!!!  We got the B12 shots from our DAN doctor.  He ordered them through a compounding pharmacy in the area.  We did not see any success with them though.Hi,

I understand you are very eager to help your child, but when it
comes to supplements, please be careful and start with the most
benign things in small doses. I would recommend reading two
books :

1. CHildren with Starving Brains :  Jaquelyn McCandless
2. Surviving Autism : Karyn Serrousi

I think B-12 (especially shots) is something you shouldn't do w/o
seeing a DAN doctor first. Most people start with a good vitamin
supplement (high in B-6 + Magneisum). You can see Kirkman's
website (kirkmanlabs.com) and check out Super Nu Thera or
Spectrum Complete. Or BrainChild Nutritionals ( forget the web
site), who also has a good multi. You can also do cod liver oil
for adding the DHA and fatty acid which these kids lack. Nordic
Naturals is a good choice (there's lots of discussion on that
here). Then, you can read up about gut issues and if you feel
that you dd has yeast overgrowth or intolerence towards glutein
or casein, you can get some supplements to tackle that. If you
want to read about biomed and gut issues, I can recommend this
web site ( danasview.net), and maybe also enzymestuff.com
(more about just digestive enzymes).

I think reading the two books will give you a better idea of the
need for the different supplenents and what you dd possibly
needs. For example, if she doesn't sleep at nite and has terrible
moods and fluffy stools, yeast is suspect. Or if she chews on
non food items, you might suspect low zinc. THings like that.
I found these two books fairly detailed without getting into too
much details which I cannot absorb.

Good luck!

Be sure to be tested for a B12 deficiancy.   You dont want to much.

Also note B12 does not give energy.  B12 is for your nerve endings.  I know I take the shots quartly.  B12 appears to give energy because it provides the thing your nerve endings are missing.

Hi there!

I would look at the recommended books above, especially, "Children With Starving Brains".  It's packed with info, pretty well written, and I am slowly absorbing it.  By the way, I'm a family doc.

I would definitely go to Dr. Neubrander's website and read all I could regarding METHYL-B12 injections: http://www.drneubrander.com/page1.html  He is located in Edison, NJ.  I live in Southeastern VA and I get our methyl-B12 injections and supplements through his office.  We started with a consult/physical in January.

Too many vitamins or supplements can be harmful.  However, methyl-B12 prescribed by a well educated and experienced DAN! or Autism Specialist physician is SAFE.  The dose is calculated by weight.  I know of no allergies to this compounded med.  It is not the same as CYANOCOBALAMIN-B12 which is what most of us think of when we think of B12 for old folks or for energy or for pernicious anemia, etc.

Regarding the omega fatty acids...I buy Coromega from Kirkman Labs www.kirkmanlabs.com .  It tastes like orange creamsicle pudding!  Excellent product!
