My son is 6 yrs old hes nonverbal, and very hyper.  I've been thinking about giving him medication, strattera for the hyperness.  Does anyone have any experience with this medication?

cari38533.7284259259 I don't have any experience with meds but i would contact his doctor, ask him to look into the clinical studies, and see if he would recommend a particular med. remember, what works for one child, maynot work for another. best of luck and i'm sure someone will come along with their experience with the med.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising health care professionals about a new warning for Strattera, a drug approved for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children. The labeling is being updated with a bolded warning about the potential for severe liver injury following two reports (a teenager and an adult) in patients who had been treated with Strattera for several months, both of whom recovered.

The labeling warns that severe liver injury may progress to liver failure resulting in death or the need for a liver transplant in a small percentage of patients. The labeling also notes that the number of actual cases of severe liver injury is unknown because of under-reporting of post-marketing adverse events.

The bolded warning indicates that the medication should be discontinued in patients who developed jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) or laboratory evidence of liver injury.

Strattera has been on the market since 2002 and has been used in more than 2 million patients. In clinical trials of 6000 patients, no signal for liver problems (hepatotoxicity) had emerged.

FDA has asked the manufacturer to add a bolded warning about severe liver injury to the labeling. Eli Lilly has agreed to alert health care professionals about the new information in a Dear Health Professional letter. The company will also update the patient package insert with information about the signs and symptoms of liver problems, which include:

Health care professionals are encouraged to report any unexpected adverse events associated with Strattera directly to Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, Ind., at 1800-LillyRx or to the FDA MedWatch program at 1800-FDA-1088. The MedWatch form is available online at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/safety/3500.pdf for download by mail (or fax, 1800-FDA-0178) to MedWatch, HFD-410, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, Md. 20857

Medication Reference
Describes the medications that may be prescribed for ASDs.hey cari, i have used this med on my son who has dx of pdd-nos,seizure disorder,cp w/diplegia and adhd. he was 4 and half when they put him on it. i didn't see any difference on this med and we even tried the risperdal with it.still no help, so we stop them.but i would definatley check with your doc for other opotions because of the issues you can have with your liver. carlo had to have is blood drawn to check his liver functions, that's no fun for a 5 yr.old. hope this helps you some. take care.mom2carloThank u so much for the advice.  I'm going to look into different medications. Just a quick note that Strattera has been the absolute best med for my
10 1/2 year old son. It has actually been working as an anti-depressant
and we didn't even know it until we took him off of it. Within a week he
developed Trichotillomania, an OCD related disorder that causes
uncontrolable urges to pull hair (eyelashes, and scalp for my son). He's
back on Strattera, and the Trich is more or less gone, with only an
occasional tiny lapse. We've also limited his sugar, and he's been working
with a behaviorist on self-management skills to control his compulsive
behavior. Bottom line: Strattera has been wonderful for us!

Karen,

That's wonderful.  I've been researching strattera and im a little skeptical because they say it might cause liver problems.  Is your son verbal, and if he is when did he start speaking and did the medication help?  Thanks , Cari

My son is fully verbal, though he did experience early speech delays. He
spoke via
echolalia from the age of two, but did not use language to communicate
until he started speech therapy at 4 1/2. Shortly after he started
kindergarten, the verbal floodgates literally opened for him, and he hasn't
stopped talking since! He didn't start taking Strattera until he was
8, so it had no bearing on his communication skills, but it definitely
controlled his hyperness. I never really thought of him as hyper until the
short time he went off of it. He was all over the map, and constantly
saying, "I don't know why I'm so hyper, what's wrong with me, why can't I
sit still"? Strattera also seems to be the med that helps his OCD
symptoms the best.Thank u for the advice i'm going to make an appt to get my son some medication, he's driving me crazy he's to hyper.

Cari,

May sound simple but does your son drink milk? Reduce milk and see if he becomes more verbal??? Like I said, sounds tooo simple.

Mickey (looking for answers)

Cari,

Does your son drink milk? (a lot or a little) Do his ears hurt off and on?

Looking for answers.

Mickey

I am so glad that Ben's sensory issues keep him away from sodas (the fizz). Plus he doesn't really like chocolate, or any other candy except lollipops. I keep those ooon short supply. Thanks  for the tip.

My 7 yr old daughter has ASHD and she has been on straterra for 2 years and doing wonderful!

Angie

Jeffrey is on tenex, and it has worked pretty good on him.  As long as other people don't give him caffeine and candy.

Tammy

Mickey, my son drinks only soy milk, when he drinks cow milk hes practically bouncing off the walls.  Thanks for your concern
