Hello and a question about Celexa

Back to Autism Information >> Next Topic

Hello everyone,

I am glad I have found this board and am looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Our son is 12 and diagnosed w/Autism since he was 2 1/2. He went through different programs and treatments (Greenspan floor play, school-based ABA, Auditory Integration, diets, secretin...). All of them have made small or bigger changes for the better.

Jean is a VERY affectionate boy and is rapidly entering puberty. That was when we started seeing behavior changes and reluctantly began considering prescription medication. This is where the experience of other board memebrs has been invaluable, and I thank everyone for sharing.

We have been recommended and tried Abilify and after approximately three weeks of having worked fine, Jean became more restless which is his problem anyway, experienced interrupted sleep pattern, finally presented with outbursts every 1/2 hr or so. We also noticed that his feet would occasionally get red and hot, but the physician did not hear of any other such reports.

In short, we removed the medication and his behavior improved dramatically both in school and at home. This year we have been  blessed with a wionderful class team (Both teacher and monitor, and aides).

My question is if anyone has had experience with Celexa that was recommended to us to sort-of even Jean's mood and activity.

I will appreciate your responses.

May you all be blessed witrh strength and patience.

Jeremy got the Citalopram(Celexa) in the Autism Study he was in last yr.  It was a blind study- but he did get the actual drug.

He did awful on it. He became MORE obsessive, MORE compulsive, MORE impulsive, and MORE miserable. He told us 'it makes my brain crazy, mom.'

While these are OUR own experiences- they are still crystal clear in our mind.

He is on nothing, and likes it that way. We like it that way too currently.

Good luck.

Gail

Gail, thanks so much. Your reply is all the more helpful since our son does not have the ability to communicate what it would feel like for him.

It is a rather long story why we even considered medication, and I am so glad to hear about other cildren doing fine without medication. I guess I will have the opportunity in the future to share our experiences and what it has been like for the past 12 years.

Best of luck to your family,

Andrea

I don't know what the researchers are trying to look at, but it seems counterintuitive to offer an SSRI (Celexa is an SSRI) to Autistic kids since research has shown elevated levels of serotonin in these children, not decreased levels....Bluebird39173.5153819444

None of the SSRI's helped Jeremy- and the Celexa - although carefully monitored due to the study- i wouldnt use medication on Jeremy again....

I believe in medication- but that class of drugs for my son,- was awful...

I love Jeremy just the way he is....the meds dont take the autism away.....
