Dear Parents,
Hello everyone I am new here and I hope to find some help and support.
Thanks for taking the time to read my posting and respond.
My son is being refered to the mind institute @UC Davis for an
evalutaion for autism, what can I expect during our appointment, who
will I meet with, what kinds of tests will they give my son. So for
anyone who has gone throught this process I would appreciate any
information you can give me, I just want to educate myself as much as i
can so i can help my son in any way he needs.
Thank you, Colleen
Colleen,
Hello!! WELCOME TO THE BOARD!! Every evaluation it seems is a little different depending on the type of doctor or facility that you take your child to. So all I can tell you is what happened at the autism eval I took my son to. We went to the Autism Division in Charleston SC. It was an all day process. It usually takes 2 days there (one of evals and the other of sitting down and discussing results) But since we live 2 hours away they crammed it into one whole day instead of 2 half type days. Before we went we were made to fill out lots of questionaire's about history sensory issues, over all development. WHen we got there there were it seemed to us...3 different portions to the testing. THe first was a interview of much of what we already filled out on paper with the psychologist. Another was a speech and language eval done by the speech and language pathologist. The third was testing done with him with the psychologist playing and interacting with him while other evaluators viewed the proccess. The next step we took a break for lunch and then came back a couple of hours later and we all went into a board room for the results. I guess there were a lot more actual tests filled out that I wasn't even aware that they were doing at the time until we got into the board room. They took all the different tests and compared those results to fill out the checklist on the DSM-IV to determine where he stood on the spectrum. So that's how it was done with us. I can't speak for anyone else here...I do know there are all different approaches to the diagnosis depending on where you are taking your child. Take care and good luck!! I hope that you get good news and your child is not in the spectrum...But if he is then at least you know you already have a support base here!! Take care and please keep us posted and let us know what happens!!!
