OH DEAR | Autism PDD

I have two that hate thunderstorms fireworks (mind you thats coming up)

I usually put my kids in the bath it takes there mind off the storm they are having fun and are not paying attention top whats going on outside.

Good luck !!

I was always told it is very dangerous to be in the bath during a storm???

I try to make a game out of it pretending to bang on pans as drums to make similar noises and to "see whos louder"

Headphones might be worth investigating. We just got a pair this week.

My son who is 2.5 and not yet dx yet but I'm pretty sure is on the spectrum saw an episode of Calliou where Calliou's dad teaches him to count after the flash of lightning until the thunder hits.....then sure enough, the next time we had a storm there was Noah to my amazement counting until the thunder hit. He loves to count and was excited every time he got the chance. Good idea! With extremely loud noises, I have found that headphones and a blanket tent seem to work well to calm my boy. But he's not as averse to loud noises as some other children with ASD, so that helps.
We should be building an ark here in ND!!    I spent part of my afternoon on the roof unclogging gutters ........no, it would be too easy to do that before it starts raining!!  Jacob spends the whole time in a panic.     He was caught in a tornado in a camper with his grandparents 2 years ago so now any sign of rain or thunder is terrifying!     We try to distract him with favorite movies or music, brushing or backrubs.     If it looks like it is going to be a severe all nighter we may all campout in the family room in the basement.....it is quieter and harder to see the lightening.   My oldest son (16) tries to act cool but I know he is still scared of storms.   He heads for the basement and watches the weather channel.     We have to keep jacob from watching tv because the weather advisories upset him so much! With my boys, I started from birth taking them out onto the (covered) front porch every time it stormed in the summer. I love storms so much, and I didn't want them to be scared and ruin them for me! Every time it would lightning or thunder i would say "Ooooh" or "Look how pretty!" and they learned that storms aren't bad.

That way I never gave them a chance to be scared! Now they love storms as much as I do!

I don't care for storms.  But I grew up down south and we had quite a few tornadoes.  And I was always told not to go outside during the storm and if you do have to go out, make sure you have rubber soles on.  Also to avoid bathtubs, cordless phones, the computer and to unplug the tv if you have an antennea hooked up to it.  And I have been thru a few tornadoes and I still don't like them.

I don't have any good advice here, but yeah...I don't think putting the kids in the bath during a storm is a good idea. I guess it brings new light to the term "riding the storm out"

Yeah the only time we were taught to be in the bathtub during a storm is if a tornado was approaching.  And you put a mattress over you.  But you are not taking a bath at that time and there definitely is no water in the tub.
