Luke also inspects his food very carefully and will remove from the fork anything that he doesn't wish to eat.  We try to feed him most things with a fork or a spoon, including pizza.  In fact, if he finds something he wants to eat and it's larger than his mouth, he hands it over to be cut into small pieces rather than taking bites.  I'm not sure if that's weird, intelligent, or normal!

with my guy, first we have to exam it , at eye level ofcourse, then we must sniff it ,  then we pick it up with the fork,  stare at it again, sniff once more and then put it in our mouth. needless to say, we don't serve 7 course meals here, we'd have to serve breakfast as dessert. LOL

My son hated bananas a few months ago, but I wanted him to learn to like them so we did a little "art" with the bananas. I would drip some food coloring on and help him smash the banana and swirl the colors around. At the end of each "project," I would (very carefully) put a little bit of fruit on his finger and place it in his mouth.

So now he will eat bananas (doesn't love them but won't push them away) but he's gotten used to mashing them up and playing with them before consumption. Only very recently was I able to put my foot down about no longer using the food coloring. But whatever gets him to eat good food, right?

For the longest time Jeffrey wouldn't eat casseroles.  He still doesn't particularly care for it but will eat it.  Now with hamburger helper I have noticed he will eat the meat first then the noodles.  Now with Gabe if he doesn't have to chew he likes it, even tho he will eat chicken.

I'm 25 years old, no dx, and I STILL do a lot of the things you guys are mentioning! However, aside from being picky, my boys eat normally!

This is very common from what I've learned on here, for nt and spectrum children. My ds isn't dx'd yet, but he definitely has some very weird ways to eat things. Like you described he will eats diff parts of foods separately that you normally would eat together. He also sometimes likes to wear his food. He will put pieces of cheese on his arms and head and then take them off and eat them. Watching him eat is definitely not boring! He's picky too so he has many things he won't even touch. W/ my NT dd if you give her something new you can tell her to open her mouth and try it and she will. My son, however, will gag if you try to make him try anything not on his ok list. He also does lots of taste testing, even if he knows what it is. (touch to tongue, again, again, slowly put in mouth, take back out, put back in, eat it lol) You are not alone in this dept!

DovesNest38532.7950694444This thread reminds me- my NT nephew used to eat his sandwiches a piece at a time. First the bread , then the cheese then the deli meat.

Now Jeffrey used to do that with his happy meals, lol.

both my kids do that with their sandwhiches - hamburgers, deli sandwhichs, and with my youngest PB&J!

My youngest eats  all the toppings on the pizza then licks off the sauce and only occasionally eats the bottom (but never the crust).  My oldest picks off the meat toppings and then eats the rest and usually the crust.

Also food does NOT intermingle unless they want it to.  That is actually a trait in my family as both myself and my father do not like our food touching each other and I actually go so far as I have to eat all of one thing before moving on to another (and I make sure my silverware doesn't have anything left over on it too).

Does anyone else out there have weird ways to eat food?  Alex eats pizza crust first and always tries to eat ice cream cones bottom up (very messy).  Is this common?

I don't know if it is common or not but Tj does the same thing. He also eats brocoli but only the stem no florettes for him. He also has a bunch more like cherrios with juice, he yakes his pizza apart and eats the crust only after it has been cut up, only eats chicken off  the bone or if he gets a leg he tries to eat the bone and not the meat. I was told not to really worry about it. It may be alittle bizare but he is eating.

DS examines his food in an odd way. He turns it over and looks at it from all angles before he eats it.my boys are so odd when they eat i dont have enough room here to list it lol. but as for pizza ryan eats it top first then nibble edge of base then leave the rest . every single time lol . um jordon has to have everything dry no sauce or wet foods unless its pasta. oh and neither of them will eat toast etc if its has any colour so we are talking warm bread .
