Oh wow, how exciting. Good Job Evie!! And Kudos to dad for reading to her.Way to go Evie! It's so exciting when they start reading on their own. It's a great self-esteem boost for them, too. YAY, WOO HOO, FANTASTIC!!!
That's a huge step, well done Evie, and well done daddy.
I'm sooo happy for you.

Not sight words, either - sounding them out. She's doing it really well, making each letter sound as she sweeps from left to right beneath the letters, than saying the word "fast". My son started reading at this age, too - but I sat him down and taught him. Evie seems motivated to do it herself.
I haven't been this encouraged in a while - if she can get reading phonetically, well, that's a big step in the right direction.
This all started because I found an old Bob's Book and read it for her bedtime story a few nights ago (The Sad Cat). I read her the book, just showing her how to sound out some of the words, but not asking her to do it herself. She's asked for it the last two nights, even making me read the word lists at the end.
Tonight, at dinner, I wrote down a few of the words from 'The Sad Cat' and she sounded them out. She kept asking me to do more and seemed really motivated. SHe even sounded out some words she's never heard before (SIN, BIN, FAD, RAD).
As I tucked her into bed tongith, she i could hear her saying the word 'Triceratops' , but she was saying it like she was sounding it out:
T-T-T-RI-CERRRRRRRR-A-T-T-T-OOOOOOO-PSSSSS
I think she might take off with this!
Abbie hasn't shown that she really gets sounding out words, yet. She gets that the words are words, but doesn't understand that she can decode them. She tries to guess the word, sometimes based on the first letter, sometimes, it's jut a random guess.
Fred,
I am so excited for Evie. Keep encouraging her. Bravo

THAT"S GREAT!!
I love BOB books! We had these too:) We also got Sarah into Dr. Seus "Green eggs and ham" she loves words that rhyme:) It wont be long my friend and she will be reading everything and hopefully her sis follows suit! It is not too late to start making simple charts:) We had little ones at first like: wash hands after potty:) Brush teeth after meals:) Then on to daily schedules to help with understanding time:morn/noon/evening ect...I am so excited for you and your girls:))
Oh that is great!!!!! Nikolas just started doing this too. I bought the baby bumble bee ABC DVD and accidently put it on the games part, and the game is sound out the words. After the first couple of words he was doing it all by himself. I was thinking about some simple books too. How exciting!
Fred that is great news!!! I hope she continues to love reading. When my son was little the teacher in Kindergarden would tell me durring free time he would get in somewhat of a hidden place in the room and read, read ,read. He had picked up reading watching tv, etc. It took me a while to notice what he was doing. He would read some of the words from billboards at four. He had discovered a new world. I am very happy for you. Evie what a great job!!!
