Do what mine does. She will put on her own play..she will be spongebob..squidward and all the other characters and act them out. And you can understand everything she says. She does it to self sooth also I believe. We are new to the austism world, we dont have an official diagnosis yet, but we have some red flags.
My son can literally recite full scenes of Spongebob. He's done it while we have been just driving in the car.
Yeah, my daughter used to recite full scenes. She invents scenes in her head and recites them, btu doesn't necessarily "play them".
My son can recite Whole episodes of Thomas even down to the music, He is always acting something out. As he playes with his toys he is constantly talking, when he scripts he will often ask us to do a certain part, like (you be squidward and say "OH spongebob"when i run by!!).
What she is doing is called scripting,Most of our kids do it.
God bless,Linda
Sounds like scripting or delayed echolalia, both of which are common in verbal individuals with Autism. I have a NT child who made up little plays all of the time when she was little - lots of "pretend play." Quinn does this with Spongebob and he likes to play with his Transformers and make up his own shows with them. He still needs to be reminded when it's appropriate like at home or in the car but not when he is with a friend, or we are out or when he is in school. This is a new thing for my son and he is 10, It exausting at times to here every little detail from a movie but at the same time I'm happy he is talking with so much detail. I'm also glad to know he isn't the only one doing it and that it has a name. When I was about 12 I had about 20 looney tunes episodes memorized, all the way down to the sound effects. I had probably a dozen or more Ninja Turtles episodes memorized, and I could also recite any part of the "Ghostbusters II" dialogue. I also listened to the radio a lot I would have the words to the songs memorized by the time I had heard the song four or five times. I often whistled or hummed the songs as a stim.My son never has done this. He is very verbal---the one of my kids who talked the best! The only thing he does finally....is play with his legos and build ships and makes flying ship(Star Wars) noises. Everything---"ship noises". We were so excited one day when my 11y dd came to me and told me that Jacob was "playing" Barbies with her--actually "talking". His Barbie was talking to hers!!!! Her Barbie asked his to go to a party and his said "sure". Then his Barbie went flying around the room with those "noises"!!
We were excited for the little bit of talk he did. He talks all the time---but no role playing or having to "think" of his own words.
He talks alot to himself and still does alot of parallel play.
Whats weird--he will go up to strangers and say hi and try to play with others.
Thought I would give an update. Ky scripts less and less now and has increased in verbal communication tremendously since my last post.
