success with the trikes! | Autism PDD

It sounds pretty good.  Have them keep it up.  It is great fun and good for them.

It was a nice over the weekend, so we got the trikes out, and lo and behold, both girls seemed to have developed the peddling coordination and some strength all on their own!  They were chasing each other up and down the sidewalk for 30 minutes, crashing into each other, having a good ol' time.  The feet are still slipping on the petals from time to time, and they still sometimes need to steer by pusing with their feet, but by and large, they were staying on course and getting around pretty well!

It's worrying to me, these motor skills delays.  It makes me wonder if I should be checking for some other sorts of disorders, or is it safe to assume it's just the PDD...

Anyway, they had a lot of fun and were out for 30 minutes riding and would have stayed longer if it weren't time for lunch.  Cheaper than physical therapy :)

Fantastic news!! We had Sarah's tricycle so long till she was too big for it..she never rode it.. then progressed and got the teeny bike with training wheels and she never rode it..now we have the big girl bike with training wheels and it still looks like new got last July

I am so glad that they had such a great time

KajoliT39153.4599652778I found the big wheels on walmarts site and ordered 2!!!! Hopefully they'll have your girls success very soon!!!!!

Thanks!

Linda, they have a big-wheel type trike and regular tricycles.  They had their 'eureka!' moment on the big-wheel but can do both.  I don't know why they suddenly got it - I'm guessing maturity - because the trikes were in the garage for months before this last attempt and then, this time, the were off!

That is great news!  I know it is a wonderful feeling when they do something that seems so child-like.  Logan still won't ride a bike yet.  I was told he has poor fine motor skills and poor strength in his legs not to mention he has a "safety" problem.  He won't swing either... does not like it... feels he is going to fall.  I was told that was a sensory processing issue.  I am still going to try this spring/summer.  Your news is so encouraging.... thanks for sharing.

That is great Fred!!!

Is there anything in particular you did to teach them? I know you said they just sort of got it one day, but I have been trying this for a long time and they just sit there. I think they do get the idea that they are suppose to pedal but maybe just not the strength for it? I was thinking about getting new trikes for them, they only have one that is old and was a cast off from someone else. They love to be pushed around on it but just aren't pedaling. Is there a particular type that is easier than others? Someone suggested a big wheel but I'm having a hard time finding one.
