Great OT visit today

[QUOTE=tabitha]

Bonnie I was told about two years ago that Jeffrey had weak upper body strength.  I was thinking no way.  So I told them he didn't to me.  You ought to see that kid in full meltdown mode.  They told me that was adreneline.  But I had my doubts about their opinion.  Maybe he just didn't feel like doing things their way.

I thought the same thing...Owen bounces and rocks so much he has got to be strong! but I guess not

Danielle,

So glad to hear that the OT visit went well.  Adam has had OT's that were not specialized in Sensory but were FAMILIAR with it and were able to impliment plans for his therapies regarding the sensory issues.  One of which helped him with his toe walking issue when he was 2.  The same one helped with oral motor sensory things as well.  So if it doesn't happen to work out to get a therapist that is actually trained in SI then the next best thing is one that is familiar with it and can still apply a program that is sensory based.  Some OT is better than no OT at all.

Karrie

She did a bunch of sensory things with Owen today, Owen really enjoyed it, and seemed to keep still for a while. He seeks movement and deep pressure, so he is always moving! and squirming.

Another OT came to this session as well..she has 25 years experience. She said that he appears to have low muscle tone..there is a range for this age, he is in the rage, but at the lower end..That is why he sits in the W position, and gets started by movement sometimes..his Trunk isn't very strong, and it is hard to hold himself up. his legs are a bit wobbly too, He struggles on uneven surfaces, and stairs, because he can't support his weight. So we are going to do some exercises. Even putting pressure on his hands to strengthen them, so he can hold pencils and what not better.

I really didn't see him as being weak, He is always moving around, but when you look closely there is some areas he needs help in

This stuff is just so interesting. I hope it works!!

Thats great!!!  Glad it went well for you.

Always great to hear about the good days!!     My boys also have low muscle tone and poor upper body strength.     They have been working on it  in PT.    Bryce did some weight  lifting exercises for a few years.    For his size he should be a lot stronger than he is,  and it seems he is stronger at some times than at others or when doing certain tasks.....if that is possible or makes any sense?!   They both had some coordination problems.....ball skills were poor....slow motor planning.     Jacob has been going off of the diving board at the pool a lot lately....his slow motor planning is really obvious.      While the other kids run off and perform their jumps without even stopping to think, jacob will get stuck and do a few extra bounces or pull his leg up to do a cannon ball before he actually jumps off the board.     He is having fun though and continues to try so that is great!
