special ed or not? | Autism PDD

No. This is not odd.  Many Asperger children ARE intellectually gifted.  Their disabilities lie more on the social and practical side of things.  Going to the gifted program might help your daughter keep from being bored.  However, when creating her IEP, make sure the District includes goals for having her APPLY what she knows in the real world.  I know many Aspie teens who get A's in higher math and can't make change.

Your school District sounds quite progressive and seems to have an understanding of Asperger's.  Good luck.

I'm happy for you that your school system is recognizing ALL of your child's special needs, including her gifted qualities. That is something I aspire to for my son, whose IQ is above average to superior, but whose current teacher is not challenging enough academically.  Everyone is so focused on improving his behavior, which is important but not the only thing that describes my son.  Ironically, when I fought for a private placement at school district expense, I thought the academics as well as the therapeutic components would be addressed.  But my son's psychiatrist warned me I would still have to monitor the academics.  And now, I am having to be assertive with the private school teacher to provide more challenging work for my son.  At least his public school teachers were a little more flexible in providing advanced academics.

Your school system is at least attempting provide a balance.  Good luck to you.

That is excellent. They notice that she is very intelligent, but needs the help w/ the social/language skills. my 6 yr old had parent teacher conference today. she is in kindergarten.  they want her to go to the gifted program half day and speacial ed half day.  This seems so odd to me. She is high functioning aspergers.  Would anyone tell of a similar situation?  We haven't been told any of this before.
