Hi Everyone,
My son, a rising 7th grader continues to have emotional outbursts which we are finding difficult to control-some in public and with classmates. We had hoped that he would mature out of these, but that hasn't happened. We are beginning to consider a special school, but don't know where or how to begin locating one. Any suggestions? He has a diagnosis of mild Autistic/Asperger. He does well academically, but struggles socially and emotionally.
Hi KC Mom Welcome to the board!
Could your son's emotional outbursts be possibly related to puberty and hormones? Have you consulted with his doctor to consider and explore the option of medications that could help OR that could be causing it? (Some meds can make our kids mean angry and nasty)
Not knowing what area you are in..... I would suggest contacting your local mentally retarded/developmentally delayed special ed school and start asking there. You may also want to try contacting your county mental health facility to ask for resources and /or your county department of human services for resources. Even ask his school.
Karjab30 (Karrie) started a message board / chat where there are all 50 State Specific Resources posted its under Autism Resources
There are also state specific resources on this site http://www.autism-pdd.net/resources-by-state.html
The other thing I can think of is Unlocking Autism's Parent 2 Parent Network or national call center 866-366-3361
I hope this helps!
