Rohan is 28 months old and still LOVES to nurse - he asks to nurse several times a day I went to my first ASA meeting ( newly diagnosed meeting ) and some of the moms swear by this diets - so I read through the book - and now after having read all your responses I thnk I owe it to Rohan to try it out
I have two questions
Rohan does not have diarrhea or constipation ( though he does have some eczema) - will this diet still help him?
The La Leche League website says you can continue to breastfeed while on this diet as long as the nursing mom is also CFGF- while the Karen Seroussi website ( the lady who wrote the book of her son's improvements while on this diet)?
I know that both of my kids who have autism had severe eczema that cleared up when we removed dairy from their diet. So maybe you can just work towards removing dairy as a start and eventually remove gluten. www.tacanow.com has a great site for gradually starting the gfcf diet. Look for the button on the left side of the screen.
I agree that you need to be gfcf if your child is still breastfeeding. But usually, it becomes really easy to eat gfcf simply because you may decide to prepare it for the entire family to reduce the work. In general, a gluten free or/and a dairy free diet has been successful in helping people with other chronic health problems. So that may be something for you to research just for yourself.
Thank you both I wrote to Karyn Seroussi and she actually wrote back saying that while she hates to suggest that someone should stop breastfeeding - the Bfeeding moms she has known have seen huge benefits only after they weaned I am definitely going CFGF myself and I am hoping that means that if Rohan and I are both CFGF it will help him make some developmental strides I think I am going to try and wean in a few months Rohan is a boobaholic :-) !!!
I always have trouble weighing up the pro's and con's of weaning. The
immune system support and bonding opportunities are precious! I guess
that is why I've tried to be baby-led, I never offer, and I never refuse, but I
do offer alternatives! Life with spectrum kids can be so complicated,
breastfeeding keeps things simple. We've skipped bottles completely of
course and just gone straight to a cup, no point in introducing an extra
change if we can avoid one! I'd put your relationship first, Rohan will stop
when he's ready.
Love the name Rohan, and I'm sure I've met a whole bunch of adult males
who are boobaholics too, haven't you? I wouldn't count on weaning to
end that one!
You are so right about that - ha ha ha
Let me get on GF_CF myself and hope that is enough and that human milk having casein does not mess Rohan's diet up
I started a gfcf diet because someone suggested it might help my then
exclusively nursing baby's eczema, and it definitly helped. Then one day I
cheated, and discovered that my body felt better gfcf too. We now
use
only gf flours, pasta etc, and I try not to let anyone have regular bread.
Rhiannon (the baby) is now 19mths old, still nursing and eating lots, and
although my perspective now is on getting and keeping Sam gfcf I often
use Rhiannon's inability to understand about sharing/not sharing as a
reason for not buying foods I don't want sam to eat! He understands its not fair for hm to eat something she can't have in
front of her. I'm sure our kids candida issues are better when we are
closer to gfcf too.
Also It's great to read about someone else who nurses an older child.
Sam weaned himself sometime around 3.5 years old, he fed through the
pregnancy and with Imogen, who weaned at 3, although It was a while
after that that she stopped trying to self soothe by sticking her arm down
my shirt and grabbing a handful of skin.
Please let me know how you do on the diet. I have started the diet with my 2-year old daughter, (but am worried about whether or not it will work.)
My daughter also had severe eczema. Her eczema became very bad exactly when her autistic symptoms began.
