Cute things your DC is doing this week | Autism PDD

Nothing big going on this week, be/c Luke has kind of been regressing lately (I think with the grandparents here he's a little anxious), but he said "hat" with the speech therapist, "my blankie" to me (when I was 'stealing' his blanket), and he did the sign for 'more' several times.

GREAT to hear other people's kids are making progress though!

Nick came home from school on his last day with a bag full of prizes he had stickers and silly putty and a few other things we asked him if Sue gave it to him (his teacher) and he said no Debrah did. This is his OT he has never mentioned her name until today. He will occasionally say Sue's name but that is it. So this was a big deal because he is acknowleging people that work with him ...by name

He has also been talking in big sentences and asking for things with please and thank you's!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't it be nice to share our little accomplishments! The parents here will certainly appreciate all the little things.

Here's mine: DS can count! My sister has been working on it with him for a while-so last night I thought I would give it a try. We were reading Clifford and there was a page with a bunch of dogs and we counted them 1-10. It's still hard to understand him- unless you know what he's doing. I think what he's doing is called rote counting but we are working on one-to-one correspondence. It's still cute though!

He also said "want train". We are desperately trying to get 2-3 word sentences out of him so I was very excited!

Thats great

Now yesterday I got Jeffrey a new map and found out something interesting about St. Paul.  They have a street called Monster.

Tammy

oh srs-mom! how sweet!  That is just wonderful he said want train, that's pretty huge!!  another train man I see LOL...best of luck!!! and thanks for sharing...

and for starting this thread I think this is a great idea btw!

Nicholas has been on fire lately at the park, he's mastering things with ease and copying the stuff the bigger kids are doing like monkey bars, climbing on the outside of the big tube slide....ugh, my hair is getting gray I swear!  but its so appropriate and I'm really pleased.  He also is showing off when others come to visit, my sister and her fiance came over last night and he started laughing when he saw her and gave them a big hug and then proceeded to run by them really fast and look back to see if they were watching...then he brought them his bubbles and when she blew them he said full of glee "bubbles!!!!" as he caught them.  and then he brought her his beloved cheese crackers to open, usually he just comes to me for that stuff but he was so excited to see her and he also inticed her to wrestle w/ him...it was so cute he was kinda showing off/ kinda flirting w/ her...we were thrilled!  He also gave her fiance a nice hi-five and made him sit down to stay when he got up for something LOL...it was the best!  She told me like 5 times today how great he was doing and she really noticed his progress since she doesn't see him all the time...it made me feel really great!  I've been kinda down lately and I think it lifted me up a bit ; )

Anyway, thanks for starting this...can't wait to read some more!

hugs!

Mine is learning how to trust himself in the water.  he finally let me talk him into wearing the arm floaties and discovered that they do help him stay up in the water and now is kicking his feet off the ground of the pool.  He even swam from the deep end to the shallower end all by himself (telling me the entire time he couldn't do it too)

Well Zachary has been doing pretty good this week, last week was a rough one, so this is much needed for me to keep my sanity *laughs*

He's been asking for help more... "Emm Mie" *laughs* sooo cute.

But the highlight of my life was 2 days ago... He was watching his new Heffalump (the winnie the pooh movie) that He got for his birthday.... and the elephant (zachary's main obsession) on there is looking for it's Mama.... Now Zachary really relates to animals for some reason he can identify with them and in fact most of his social interaction has been accomplished by things he's seen on animal movies like Lion King, Jungle Book ect.  So I go into his room to see how He's doing, I try not leave Zach off on his own too long.  I picked him up and said "hey buddy what ya doing" and He turned, looked at me, touched my face and said "Mama" ... I repeated it with a HUGE smile and said yes... Mama.  He repeated then a bunch of times.... *laughs* He of course hasn't said it since then.... but this is the first time that Zachary has acknowledged me as Mama.

Sarah- That is so great about the Mama! Yea Zackie!  On the surface it looks like Katie is having a rough week...She is in a new class for ESY and ALL the other kids are blossoming except Kate..but that is just on the surface! She started swimming lessons this week and is LOVING it (we had her in swimming lessons 4 months ago and it was a natural disaster-she avoided all bodies of water including the bathtub for 3 months).  She is really ready this time and having a ball! I think that is why she is stagnant in class...pure exhaustion.

This is a great idea! From reading the previous posts, its obvious that our kids are making some great progress!

As for my dd, she is starting to answer "yes" to my questions (when prompted) and even throws in a "please" for good measure. Her ST got her to say "yes" today a few times in session and was thrilled. Also she has started giving her stuffed animals "showers" in the sink, complete with soap and drying off, etc. and having them sit on the potty. AND, greatest of all, she started using the regular toilet herself instead of the potty chair (though to be honest she is still in pull ups most of the time). It feels good to write about some accomplishments for a change.

To all the kids for their triumphs no matter how big or small they may seem to anyone else, they're HUGE to US!!

Tony has this thing about towels...HATES them!! So, as he was getting out of the shower, I was standing there with the towel, to get it "over with" quickly. He said,"I'll do it Mom"...now I know he's 9 y/o & SHOULD be doing it by himself, but it's just been really hard for him ...he hates the "feel" of any kind of towel. So, I stood there in case he changed his mind, & he says "Ummmm,Mom...a lil privacy,Please!!" I just about died laughing, but couldn't let HIM see that. But he did it! He's been doing it every time since then too! That was a few weeks ago by the way, but I'm STILL getting a kick out of it!!

God Bless you all & keep you all safe!

LINDA...aka Tony'sMom....aka MWN64

So he said "want train".  Welcome to the world of Thomas the Tank Engine.  It is a joyful place.  Get used to getting "He's a really useful engine..." stuck in  your head all the time lol.

On Fathers day, Alex (4.5 pdd-nos) saw his sister give dad a drawing as a present.  Not to be outdone, he ran to the art supplies and drew what we think is Thomas the Tank Engine.  He told his dad it was a train and it said "Dad you are a good driver".  This from a kid who couldn't draw a circle two months ago.  Now he is giving Hallmark competition.  I was so proud I started to cry.  I think dh did a little too.  Happy day.

Congrats to all on the mini-milestones

Thank you all for posting!  I really enjoyed reading all the stories.  It just shows I have great things to look forward to in the future.

Can't wait to read next weeks.

Wow srsmom I was coming here today to post about ds counting lol. You beat me to it! Today w/ ST ds counted to 8! I was FLOORED! I mean this is a boy who says hardly anything and I never knew he could count. I had never heard it before. She was counting and he just started counting w/ her. It wasn't perfect, but it was in ordr and you could definitely hear that he was trying to say "one, two, etc." I am thinking he learned it from Dora as they count on there a lot and he watches her constantly. He wouldn't go past 8.

It's funny that you mentioned Luke doing sign for more. I know ds knows it but he will not do it darn it. If you ask if he wants more and make the sign to him he will only hold out his hands for you to take them and make his hands do the sign but for some reason he will NOT do it himself. But he counted today so WHO CARES for now I guess right! lol.

It has been nice reading these accomplishments tonight thanks for posting them. I have much happiness and positive thinking right now w/ ds's progress.

Amber

I just love this kind of posting.Well.......after a few years of my trying to teach Bryce   (16) how to mow the lawn it has finally paid off!!   He has quit mowing in circles and crazy eights and chasing the other kids with the lawn mower (which raised my blood pressure beyond the boiling point!!)    He now has a few lawn mowing jobs and we are working on the responsibility of having a job and doing his best.     Today he made his first !!Now to get him to do it with out complaining!   bonnie

Hey Bonnie once you figure out that secret let us all know!!!!  I think all kids come preprogrammed with the complain button stuck.

Tammy

We've had a rough week here, lots of anxiety so I don't have any real gains to report but I do have a funny.

Nate has a brother, J.D., who is 1 yr younger than him and is already taking on a big brother role some of the time.  This past Thurs. J.D. got to go w/ my parents' to their friends' house where he got to swim and play w/ a bunch of kids, had a blast.  He was really excited because grandma said that when we get back from vacation he can go w/ them again.  He's been keeping the whole experience a secret, not wanting anyone else to catch on and "steal" his good time.  Today though he decided to tell Nate about it and then said, "Next time you can go with them and I'll stay home."  2 minutes later Nate returned, shoes on, ready to go.  What made it so funny is he hadn't gotten dressed yet, was still wandering around in his boxers but here he stood, boxers on, shoes on, saying, "Ok.  I'm ready to go with grandma!"  We had a good chuckle.

When we're in a rough period these are the things I hold on to.  Laughter is very underrated.  Without it I'd be in a straight jacket.

Which brings me to 1 more quick funny.  Nate is extremely literal.  One Sunday morning as we were getting ready for church all of the kids were behaving like hoodlums and I was pulling my hair out just getting them in the van to go.  When we finally got in the van they were bickering, Nate was freaking.  I was frustrated and said, "Everyone needs to stop now.  If you guys don't quit acting like this they're going to come and take me to the loony bin, lock me in a room and strap me down!"  I was frustrated, not my finest moment, also pre-dx so I really didn't understand why Nate did what he did.  I get the kids to church, drop them in their classes, and then enjoyed the service.  After that I went to pick them up and Nate's teacher took me aside.  Apparently during prayer request time Nate had actually spoken up and told the room full of kids, teachers and helpers that they needed to pray for me because after church I had to go to the loony bin where they were going to lock me up and tie me down.  The teacher wanted to know if I was ok or if there was something she could do to help, lol.

I am convinced that without Nate I may not have endured so much frustration in life but I definitely would have missed out on a lot of laughter.  It is worth it!

OH TIA,

That is hilarious about the looney bin thing!!  Thanks for sharing that...I needed a good laugh!!
